Mamma Mia 3 Update Shared By Amanda Seyfried As She Wants To Reteam With Director & Star Of 81% RT Thriller

Amanda Seyfried recently mentioned she’d be thrilled to make another Mamma Mia! movie, and she has someone specific in mind to direct it. Her new film, The Housemaid, directed by Paul Feig and also starring Sydney Sweeney, comes out this weekend. Plus, Seyfried’s drama The Testament of Ann Lee, directed by Mona Fastvold, will be released in theaters on Christmas Day.

Amanda Seyfried is a strong contender for the 2026 Best Actress Oscar for her work in The Testament of Ann Lee, already receiving nominations from the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes. While she’s been nominated for an Oscar before, Seyfried has several upcoming films, and she’s still open to the possibility of making another Mamma Mia! sequel after the 2018 film Here We Go Again.

While promoting The Housemaid and The Testament of Ann Lee with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan, Amanda Seyfried mentioned the long-awaited sequel on two occasions. During a joint interview for The Housemaid with co-stars Sydney Sweeney and director Paul Feig, Seyfried was asked about the status of a third film, to which she replied:

We’re still very early in the process and haven’t finalized anything yet. With so many people involved, it’s hard to envision how everything will come together without a clear storyline. I’m eager to see if there’s a good part for Sydney Sweeney, but we need to figure out the overall story first. The music will be a significant element, so it’s important everyone agrees on the direction. Honestly, I wish I was the producer—I’d have it all sorted out by now.

Feig wondered if there were enough unused ABBA songs for a potential sequel. Seyfried responded that they didn’t need completely new material, explaining that there were already enough existing hits to choose from. She specifically hoped they wouldn’t use lesser-known songs like “King Kong” and would instead focus on popular tracks like “Super Trouper” and “Chiquitita” for Mamma Mia 3.

Seyfried and Sweeney playfully discussed her involvement in the film series, jokingly agreeing that she only needs to reprise her singing role in Mamma Mia and enjoy herself. Sweeney enthusiastically agreed. Director Paul Feig then unexpectedly asked Seyfried if he could direct her in a future project. This conversation was revealed in a separate interview with ScreenRant while Seyfried was promoting The Testament of Ann Lee.

When asked about the possibility of Paul Feig directing a third Mamma Mia! movie, Amanda Seyfried confirmed he seemed very enthusiastic about it. She praised Feig’s skills as a director and editor, suggesting they would be valuable if another Mamma Mia! film were to happen.

Honestly, ‘Mama Mia’ is a classic. Paul is just… unique. It’s incredible to watch him work, and the final edit is always so impressive. I don’t know how he pulls it off, but he’s truly one of a kind. He really understands that style of comedy and he found a great way to play off my character’s personality. He’s just a phenomenal talent.

The 2008 film Mamma Mia!, featuring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and others, was adapted from the popular Broadway musical of the same name. A sequel released in 2018 was both a continuation and a backstory, showing the younger years of Meryl Streep’s character (the mother of Amanda Seyfried’s character) alongside events happening in the present day.

In the movie’s finale, Sophie (Seyfried) has a baby after reconnecting with her grandmother (Cher). While the third Mamma Mia! film faces the difficulty of being a sequel to a sequel that many didn’t ask for, it still has the potential to be just as enjoyable as the first two. The filmmakers are also considering adding fresh faces and perspectives to keep the story exciting.
