Creating stories about Batman’s history is tough for writers. After almost 90 years of comics, almost every detail of Bruce Wayne’s life has been explored. But a new storyline in Detective Comics introduces a mystery connected to the beginning of the Justice League and a little-known hero. Interestingly, one of Batman’s former Justice League teammates—who also knew this forgotten hero—is moving to Gotham City.
Detective Comics #1107, written by Tom Taylor and illustrated by Pete Woods, begins with a conflict – but it’s not the usual gang warfare in Gotham. This time, Batman is clashing with Green Arrow, who has recently relocated to the city with Black Canary and is now operating as a vigilante.
Now that Poison Ivy is the Mayor and Vandal Savage controls the police, Gotham City desperately needs heroes. But Batman, as always, prefers to work alone and isn’t eager to accept assistance, especially from the more attention-grabbing Oliver Queen and Dinah Lance.
As a big fan, I was really intrigued by the latest storyline! It turns out Green Arrow moving to a new city happens right around a significant anniversary. What’s even cooler is that despite their clashing personalities, Batman, Green Arrow, and Black Canary all end up at the same graveside. It’s the final resting place of a mysterious hero they knew only as Prion – apparently, he worked with all three of them when they were just starting out. It’s a fascinating piece of backstory!
What do we know about Batman’s ally Prion?
The three heroes shared memories of Prion, a former teammate Oliver referred to as part of “Flight Squadron Delta.” Batman explained Prion’s death was a tragic accident that could have happened to anyone. Black Canary feels a sense of guilt over what happened, suggesting a past romantic relationship with Prion. It’s clear he had feelings for her, and Dinah hesitates before admitting she felt the same way.
Their quiet watch was broken when a young girl arrived, causing Batman to vanish. She said she’d known Prion, but wasn’t sure if he was a smiley person. Before they could find out who she was, an older woman, claiming to be her grandmother, arrived and took her away. The grandmother recognized Oliver Queen, wishing him well during his stay in Gotham. She also appeared to disapprove of Prion as she looked at his grave.
This scene subtly reveals a few key things. Despite Batman’s detective skills, he doesn’t know who Prion is. He also didn’t recognize the grandmother, implying she’s from outside Gotham. Considering her wealth, Bruce Wayne likely would have known her if she lived in the city. These clues create a significant mystery for Batman, Robin, and Nightwing to investigate in upcoming issues.
Detective Comics #1107 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
