David Robert Mitchell’s horror film, It Follows, didn’t become an instant hit despite good reviews. However, as more people found it on streaming platforms, its popularity steadily increased. Now widely considered one of the best – or at least most talked about – horror movies of the 2010s, many felt the film’s unique concept could be explored further. Almost ten years after its release, a sequel, They Follow, has been announced, but the original star, Maika Monroe, isn’t optimistic about it happening soon.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Monroe was asked about the sequel, to which she detailed:
There’s been talk about something positive coming up, and I’ve heard some encouraging news, so I’m optimistic. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
While the actor hasn’t said the project is definitely cancelled, which is encouraging, calling any possibility of it continuing just “rumors” is a little disappointing.
What Will ‘They Follow’ Be About?
In the first It Follows movie, Jay was haunted by a mysterious being that could disguise itself as anyone and relentlessly pursued her. The only way to stop it was to pass it on to someone else through sexual intimacy. While Jay and her friends believed they defeated the creature at the end of the film, we suspect it’s still out there.
Monroe didn’t fully divulge what a sequel would explore, though she did offer a few teases:
This isn’t quite what I anticipated, especially regarding Jay’s role, which I found really captivating. I think audiences will feel the same surprise and excitement. It might sound familiar, but we’ve brought back the original team to stay true to the source material. The story explores similar themes, but on a much larger scale, and I’m incredibly enthusiastic about it.
When Will ‘They Follow’ Be Released?

Radius-TWC
It’s funny, when you’re in a smaller, independent film that really takes off, suddenly everyone’s paying attention to you! That happened to me around the time It Follows came out. I was also in Adam Wingard’s The Guest then, which has gained a really dedicated fanbase too. Since then, I’ve worked on a bunch of different projects – Independence Day: Resurgence, Greta, Villains, Watcher, Longlegs, and even a remake of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. I’m really excited about my next one, Reminders of Him, which is coming out soon.

Director Mitchell’s last film, Under the Silver Lake, came out in 2018, but he has a new sci-fi movie, Flowervale Street, coming out this year. Actress Monroe recently explained in an interview with Decider that the reason for project delays was due to scheduling issues.
We’ve heard talk about a new movie coming next year, and everyone’s been really focused on other projects. However, the script is fantastic, and I truly believe this film needs to be made – the fans will love it. It’s a really special story.
As a film buff, I’m really excited about Monroe and Mitchell. If they keep landing roles, things could get hectic for them, sure. But honestly, any buzz they generate could be exactly what They Follow needs to finally get made. It’s a project I’ve been keeping an eye on, and I’m hoping their current success will give it the boost it deserves.
