Magic: The Gathering Marvel Crossover Has Silly Dr. Doom Card

Wizards of the Coast has previewed cards from the new Marvel Super Heroes set, and one of them hilariously references a famously goofy moment involving Doctor Doom.

This isn’t the first time Marvel characters have appeared in Magic: The Gathering. They’ve previously released special Secret Lair sets and a Spider-Man collection. The new Marvel Super Heroes set will draw from across the entire Marvel Universe, featuring characters from teams like the X-Men and the Thunderbolts as both creatures and spells.

Doctor Doom’s Horn Blowing Is Getting A Magic: The Gathering Card

A sneak peek at the upcoming Marvel Super Heroes set for Magic: The Gathering revealed some of the cards players can expect. Among them is a newly illustrated version of the Horn of Greed, an artifact that lets everyone draw an extra card each time a land is played.

This image has become incredibly popular online, turning into a widely shared meme, especially as Doctor Doom’s profile has risen with the news that Robert Downey Jr. will portray him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Doctor Doom’s Horn Is Comic Book Canon

Doctor Doom is now known as a fearsome villain, but he wasn’t always so intense. Back in the early days of Marvel comics, writers often used him for comedic effect, leading to some surprisingly funny moments, like the one shown here.

This version of the Horn of Greed first appeared in Spidey Super Stories #53. In that story, Doctor Doom steals a magical horn from Namor and summons a sea monster with it. He intends to control the monster and use it to conquer the world.

As expected, the villain’s scheme quickly fails when Spider-Man and Namor join forces to destroy his horn, sending the monster back home. Though this scene likely won’t appear in Marvel movies, it’s a beloved moment for fans, and it’s fun to see it represented on a Magic: The Gathering card.

Alongside the announcement of a new version of the Horn of Greed card featuring Doctor Doom, Wizards of the Coast previewed 37 additional Marvel Super Heroes Magic: The Gathering cards. These include Commander decks centered around the Fantastic Four. The full Marvel Super Heroes set for Magic: The Gathering is scheduled to launch in June 2026, and fans can anticipate more card reveals leading up to the release.
