Madison Prewett, who was on The Bachelor in 2020, has often talked about the difficult parts of being on the show. She says she lost around 20 pounds while trying to win Peter Weber’s affection, possibly because of the harsh criticism she received from his mother during the live finale. But Barb wasn’t the only problem. Prewett recently shared that she experienced some serious trauma during filming, and surprisingly, she claims the producers even referred to themselves as “witches.”
Madison Prewett recently appeared on the Candace Cameron Bure Podcast to discuss how Christians are depicted in television and her time on The Bachelor Season 24. She shared a story about a conversation with a neurologist and her husband, Grant Troutt, expressing her desire to visually see the changes in her brain after her experiences. Prewett then stated:
Looking back, I realize I went through two really tough times making the show. First, just the day-to-day filming was incredibly stressful. It wasn’t just normal production pressure either – things got really weird. Some of the producers even identified as witches, and honestly, a lot of dark stuff was going on behind the scenes.
Candace Cameron Bure was surprised to learn the producers had chosen that name for themselves. Considering her religious beliefs and her concern that horror movies can invite negativity into a home, her reaction makes sense. And honestly, I find myself agreeing with her.
Isn’t The Bachelor supposed to be a show about finding love? Even if it’s a manufactured kind of romance, it feels a little odd to approach your job that way. I’m not new to this, though – I’ve watched Bachelor Nation long enough to know the producers sometimes push contestants into crazy situations that clearly aren’t about helping them find genuine connections (who could forget the ‘poop baby’ incident?).
I really don’t get why the show’s producers felt they needed to portray themselves as mysterious or magical. And Madison Prewett explained that her second difficult experience happened when the season of The Bachelor with Peter Weber finally aired, because…
Another difficult part was experiencing it all unfold publicly – seeing people react in real-time, and reading about it in the tabloids. I went from being completely unknown to suddenly having celebrities and magazines like People talking about me, and gaining a lot of attention online. It was a really jarring and unexpected experience, and something I don’t think anyone could truly prepare for.
The experience was a bit of a rollercoaster, and while it ultimately led to some good things – like an appearance on Candace Cameron Bure’s podcast – Madison Prewett wouldn’t wish it on anyone. She explained to the actress that, despite being glad she went through it, it wasn’t something she’d recommend to others.
It’s funny, because since that happened, a lot of people have told me they want to be on The Bachelor, and I immediately tell them it’s a terrible idea. I would never let anyone I care about go on that show.
Strong words!
Don’t expect a new season of The Bachelor in January 2026. Instead, on Sunday, March 22nd, Taylor Frankie Paul from The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives will be starring as The Bachelorette. Watch it at 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC, or stream the episodes the next day on Hulu.
