Madelyn Cline Delivers An Amazing Scream In I Know What You Did Last Summer, And It Was Harder To Pull Off Than You Might Think

Could a top-notch slasher movie really be exceptional if it lacks a terrifying scream? When the atmosphere is tense, viewers often follow the feelings of the characters, and an authentic portrayal of terror can send shivers down the spines of movie-watchers. As we approach the premiere of I Know What You Did Last Summer this weekend, I’ll give you a sneak peek that Madelyn Cline will provide a chilling performance in the upcoming 2025 film – however, what spectators won’t realize is that achieving the perfect scream was a challenging process.

During my conversation with the actress not long ago at the press event for the legacyquel in Los Angeles, I learned that the scene was shot right after she had pneumonia (a lung infection). This illness prevented her from rehearsing for the scream before production started, and on the day of her crucial on-set performance, there were several takes marred by coughing fits because of it.

It’s clear that when we began, I had recently recovered from pneumonia. Consequently, my practice was minimal. The only way to produce that shout was by giving it my all and sending it, as they say (laughs). I had to exert myself to the maximum. As soon as director Jen Kaytin Robinson said ‘Cut’, I would turn aside and cough. They’d ask if I was alright, to which I replied in the negative, mimicking the use of an inhaler, and then we’d start again.

As she continued speaking, she offered some advice drawn from her own experiences for any actors considering a horror role like hers: it’s essential to commit fully to the part, or as she expressed, “give it your everything.

To effectively deliver a scream characteristic of a Final Girl or Scream Queen, one must let go entirely and give it all without restraint.

In the opening act of “I Know What You Did Last Summer”, Danica, portrayed by Cline, isn’t yet aware of the vengeance plot targeting her and her friends in the coastal town of Southport, North Carolina. However, she begins to suspect something is amiss when she stumbles upon one of The Fisherman’s victims.

Observing a grisly, bloodstained crime scene undoubtedly helps an actor achieve the right state of fear and readiness to let out a genuine scream. However, Madelyn Cline maintains her commitment to giving it her all: 100% effort.

I mean, what I was reacting to too is pretty gruesome, so that also helps, but just: full send.

In the approaching days, people from all around can expect to live the terror firsthand, since “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is set to hit movie theaters on July 18. For those with delicate hearing, take heed!
