Macaulay Culkin Talks About Watching Home Alone With His Kids, And I Love How He Trolls Them

It’s the Christmas season, and many people are enjoying their favorite holiday movies, including a lot who choose Home Alone. Interestingly, the movie is also a hit with Macaulay Culkin and Brenda Song’s kids—even though they don’t realize their dad is the star!

Macaulay Culkin and director Christopher Columbus recently gathered at the Academy Museum to mark the 35th anniversary of Home Alone. Culkin shared with The Hollywood Reporter that he’s deliberately kept the fact that he starred in the film a secret from his children, and has even tried to prevent them from discovering it. He went on to explain how he’s been doing this.

People don’t even refer to the movie as ‘Home Alone’ anymore; they just say ‘Kevin.’ Someone recently told me Kevin is funny, and I joked that he’s also good-looking – the type of guy a mom might like! I was showing my oldest son a picture of me and my siblings, and he immediately pointed to me and asked who that was, thinking it was Kevin. I had to quickly say, ‘No, that’s your aunt!’

It’s obvious Macaulay Culkin’s children would notice the resemblance between an old photo of their dad and a character from their favorite movie, but he’s deliberately trying to stop them from realizing it. He needs to hide his new commercial from them.

It’s actually been surprisingly tricky for him! He hasn’t told his own kids he’s the one who plays Kevin in Home Alone, but some of his family members haven’t kept it a secret from their kids. I heard a story about his young cousin almost letting it slip recently – it was a close call, apparently. He was telling me all about it…

My little cousin, who’s five, came over. When we told her we were going to watch ‘Home Alone’ (‘Kevin’) tonight, she immediately turned to me and said, ‘You’re Kevin!’ I jokingly told her she was Kevin and to be quiet – I was trying to let her still believe in the movie’s magic.

This is really interesting to me. I wonder if they treat Brenda Song’s old Disney Channel appearances the same way, or if this only happens with Home Alone. It also makes me curious about what the child actors believe their parents actually do for work.

Macaulay Culkin’s children were born in 2021 and 2022, so they are now around three and four years old. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to keep his involvement with the potential Home Alone sequel a secret, as they’ll eventually learn to read and recognize his name in the credits. He’ll have to explain it to them at some point, and it will be hard to hide if the project moves forward.
