Fan favorites like Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa are back in a new Star Wars comic! This story takes place during a rarely explored time in the Star Wars universe and will launch a fresh chapter for the iconic saga.
Okay, so I just heard some awesome news! Lucasfilm is dropping a new Star Wars comic series in April called Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – Echoes of the Empire. It’s gonna follow Luke, Leia, and Chewie as they head to Batuu – you know, the planet from Galaxy’s Edge at Disney – to find this lost Jedi Holocron. It’s a five-issue series written by Ethan Sacks, with art by Jethor Morales and Roi Mercado. The cool part? It takes place between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi! I’m already hyped. They even showed off some of the cover art for the first issue by Phil Noto – it looks amazing!
This news comes alongside an announcement from Lucasfilm about its popular Star Wars theme park. Usually, the park focuses on the stories and characters from the most recent Star Wars films, but it will now be reimagined to take place during the time of the original trilogy, bringing back iconic villains like Darth Vader. A new exhibit, Echoes of the Empire, will explain the reasons behind this change in setting.
Ethan Sacks played a key role in creating the backstory for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge when it opened in 2019, writing the initial comic book series. Now, he’s back with a new comic to introduce a new period for the theme park. It’s currently unknown if this new storyline is permanent, but with more backstory being revealed and a fresh miniseries coming out, Galaxy’s Edge appears to be leaning into the era of the original Star Wars trilogy for the foreseeable future.
This week has been full of news regarding Star Wars. A major change happened at Galaxy’s Edge with the departure of its long-time leader after more than ten years. She’s being replaced by Dan Filoni, the creator of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Ahsoka, and Lynwen Brennan. It’s not yet known if this change is connected to the new creative team’s plans for the future of Star Wars, but considering the timing, it’s likely Filoni and Brennan were involved in the decision before their recent promotions.
Star Wars Needs to Fill in More of the Original Trilogy Timeline
The new experiences at Galaxy’s Edge should be thrilling for Star Wars enthusiasts. The original Star Wars trilogy—Episodes IV, V, and VI—hasn’t been explored enough, despite remaining incredibly popular. While the films are well-loved, many of the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo that happened between the movies haven’t been fully told, especially outside of comic books.
Galaxy’s Edge is a promising sign for fans who want to explore the stories between the original Star Wars films. With new leaders at Lucasfilm, it suggests the studio is committed to developing this period further. We’ll get a better idea of their plans in the coming months when Filoni and Brennan reveal the future of Star Wars.
Fans are most eager to explore the wider Star Wars universe beyond the main films. A lot of rich storytelling existed previously, but was labeled as “Legends” when Disney bought Lucasfilm. This created a gap in the stories of Luke, Leia, and the Rebel heroes between the original and sequel trilogies. We don’t know much about what happened during those thirty years, which offers a great opportunity to tell new stories about their fight against the remains of the Empire and the beginnings of the First Order.
The recent focus on the time period depicted in Galaxy’s Edge might suggest that Star Wars will explore this era more fully in upcoming stories. This shift comes with a new creative team at Lucasfilm, who are now prioritizing a time period that’s particularly beloved by fans.
