A key executive from Lucasfilm spoke up about the forthcoming Star Wars animations amid doubts surrounding the brand. Ever since Star Wars: Clone Wars premiered in 2008, there’s always been an animated Star Wars series that fans have eagerly anticipated. Even during periods when movies were scarce, Dave Filoni, now Lucasfilm’s Chief Creative Officer, and the Lucasfilm Animation team kept us entertained with exciting space adventures to enjoy.
The team’s productive pace has significantly decreased, leaving the future of animated Star Wars in a state of ambiguity. Without any upcoming series such as Clone Wars, Rebels, or The Bad Batch in sight, it remains uncertain what Lucasfilm intends for their animation division.
Luckily for fans, Filoni teased them that Star Wars animation is going nowhere.
In his unique message at the 20-year celebration of Lucasfilm Animation during San Diego Comic-Con, Filoni shared that George Lucas, the genius behind Star Wars, has always had faith in animation and wishes to keep creating it for another twenty years.
The complete statement from Filoni reads as follows (via GamesRadar):
Reflecting on my journey at Lucasfilm Animation, I never anticipated that this role would span two decades. Yet here I am, marking 20 years with this remarkable team. It’s the collective dedication and tireless effort of our gifted colleagues that has made this milestone possible. The enthusiasm fans have shown towards our work surpasses any expectation – George Lucas probably saw it coming. He always had faith in animation and in us, encouraging us to ‘Dare to be great.’ Over the past 20 years, I believe we’ve succeeded in doing just that, and I can only hope we continue for another 20.
Lucasfilm Animation is set to return on streaming platforms next year with the debut of “Maul: Shadow Lord”, an animated series focusing on Darth Maul’s exploits after Order 66. In the realm of animated content, this year will also introduce “Star Wars: Visions” Season 3 – a new season of non-canonical anime Star Wars tales – as well as “LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past”.
What’s Next for Star Wars Animation?
Despite uncertainty surrounding the future of Star Wars animation, it’s thrilling to learn that Dave Filoni and the Lucasfilm team regard the animated content as worthwhile and a direction they are keen on continuing.
The upcoming major animation project by Lucasfilm is titled “Maul: Shadow Lord,” scheduled for release in 2026. This new series continues the saga within the Star Wars: Clone Wars universe, delving into the storyline post-Order 66 and focusing on the lightsaber-wielding Darth Maul.
Moving forward, however, the future of Star Wars animations remains uncertain due to the absence of a long-standing series as it had before.
It’s been whispered that the Lucasfilm Animation group might be secretly developing a new multi-episode Star Wars show, possibly succeeding the likes of Rebels and Clone Wars.
The upcoming series might potentially continue from where “The Bad Batch” Season 3 concludes, focusing on young Omega as she becomes part of the Rebellion. Alternatively, it could leap ahead in the timeline, delivering a tale rooted in the happenings of the Original Trilogy – similar to how “Clone Wars” bridged the gap between the Prequels and the Original Trilogy.
