The first season of the show will finish this Thursday. Although FX hasn’t officially said if it will be back for another season, the show’s creator, Connor Hines, has already shared which famous Hollywood couple he’d like to feature if it’s renewed.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the show’s creator, Hines, discussed who he thought would be ideal for the lead roles following John F. Kennedy Jr. and Sarah Pidgeon. He suggested Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, noting they possessed the passionate energy needed for the series.
Liz and Dick’s Relationship Was Always in the Headlines
Okay, so I just finished revisiting the story of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and wow, what a couple! They were absolute icons, two of the biggest stars of old Hollywood. It all started on the set of Cleopatra back in ’63 – they had this incredibly public affair while both were married to other people. Honestly, that scandal feels like a real turning point. The constant paparazzi photos proving everything was true? That’s when celebrities really started losing control of their privacy, and their personal lives became completely intertwined with their public image. It’s fascinating – and a little tragic – to look back on how that changed everything.
As a film critic, I always find it fascinating looking back at iconic screen pairings, and Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton certainly delivered. Their chemistry first exploded on screen in 1963 with Cleopatra, a film that launched a remarkable run of eleven projects together. We saw them light up the screen again in films like The Sandpiper (1965), the intensely dramatic Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), and the playfully combative The Taming of the Shrew (1967). It’s almost poetic that their final on-screen collaboration was the 1973 TV movie Divorce His, Divorce Hers – a title that, in hindsight, feels eerily prescient, considering their real-life divorce just a year later.
After divorcing in 1974, the couple surprisingly got back together and remarried in October 1975. Unfortunately, their second attempt at marriage didn’t last long, ending in divorce again by July 1976. Years later, in 1983, they shared the stage together in a revival of Noël Coward’s play, Private Lives.
Hines is right to think Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s romance would make compelling TV – their story has already been told on screen. For example, Lifetime released the movie Liz & Dick in 2012, with Lindsay Lohan and Grant Bowler playing the iconic couple. The BBC followed up a year later with Burton & Taylor, starring Helena Bonham Carter and Dominic West as the famous pair.
Love Story Is the Fifth Series in Ryan Murphy’s American Story Franchise
Love Story is the latest series from Ryan Murphy, following his popular American Story franchise which includes American Horror Story, American Crime Story, American Horror Stories, and American Sports Story. The first season of Love Story tells the dramatic story of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s relationship. Tragically, the couple and Bessette’s sister, Lauren, died in a plane crash on July 16, 1999.
I’ve been really enjoying Love Story on FX, Hulu, and Disney+, and it’s been getting some great reviews! I was especially interested to hear Jack Schlossberg, JFK Jr.’s nephew, talk about it. He recently pointed out that the creators, Murphy and Hines, didn’t reach out to the Kennedy family before making the show, and he felt that was a problem.
Schlossberg hopes viewers will remember the show is purely fictional. He told CBS’ Sunday Morning that the person featured knows nothing about the real events and is profiting from a disturbing portrayal of someone else’s life.
The final episode of Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette will be shown on FX on March 26th, and will be available to stream on Hulu starting the following day.
