Long-Awaited Robert Downey Jr. Sequel Will Make Major Franchise Departure (Confirmed)

A promising new development has emerged for one of Robert Downey Jr.’s upcoming sequel projects, hinting at a significant shift for the franchise. Downey is well-known in the world of blockbuster films, achieving massive success over the past two decades primarily through his role as Tony Stark in the MCU. But Marvel isn’t the only long-running series he’s been a part of throughout his career.

Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes 3 has a new development: the story might take place outside of London, potentially moving the action to the United States and trading the familiar foggy streets for a new setting.

Sherlock Holmes producer Susan Downey recently hinted to Collider that the third movie in the series, which is still being developed, will be taking a

Downey says the upcoming movie won’t be set in 19th-century London; instead, it will be “set in America:

We’ve been discussing a somewhat different approach. It’s always been primarily based in America, and while I’m not entirely sure if that’s the best choice, I really like the concept. I’d genuinely love to pursue it, but it’s proving difficult. It’s been a while, and the expectations are high – or at least, Robert [Downey Jr.] has set a very high standard, so I’m uncertain about how to proceed.

This marks the first instance of the traditional depiction of Sherlock appearing in the United States, as none of the initial Holmes tales were ever set in America.

Fans of Holmes have often wondered if the character might have visited America during the gaps between the stories we know, but those potential adventures were never actually written into the books themselves.

Sherlock Holmes 3 has been planned since 2011, but it’s faced many delays and challenges during production. Even with few public announcements, everyone working on the movie continues to believe it will eventually be made.

The film is expected to feature Robert Downey Jr. again in the leading role as the detective, with Jude Law reprising his part as the curious Dr. John Watson. Currently, there’s no news about when the third film in the series will be released.

When Will Sherlock Holmes 3 Ever Happen?

Even though it’s been more than ten years since the last Sherlock Holmes film, people still frequently ask about Sherlock Holmes 3.

The film is currently being developed at Warner Bros., and both Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are expected to return and play their characters from previous installments.

Not everyone from the original creative team will return for the third film, as Guy Ritchie is no longer involved with the project. In 2019, Bohemian Rhapsody director Dexter Fletcher was chosen to take over, and he is generally believed to still be directing the movie.

Despite assurances from people like Susan Downey that the film is still in development, Jared Harris – who played Professor James Moriarty in previous Sherlock Holmes movies – has stated he hasn’t received any updates.

During a 2025 interview with TopMob, Harris stated that “no one’s bringing this up with me” and suggested people “shouldn’t continue to inquire.”

I remember back in 2024, Jude Law was talking about the movie, and he said things were “evolving.” Basically, he was letting us know that even though things were changing, the movie was still definitely happening and coming together. It was a clever way of saying they were still working on it!

Once this plan is confirmed and the script is completed, filming could begin shortly after. This suggests that fans might be able to watch Sherlock Holmes 3 within the next two years, if everything goes quickly.
