‘Loki’ Star Confirms Their Disney+ Return In 2026

Gugu Mbatha-Raw, known for her role in Disney+’s Loki, has been cast in a new Disney+ series, The War Between the Land and the Sea, a spin-off of Doctor Who. This comes as the future of her Loki character, Ravonna Renslayer, and her connection to the MCU’s Kang storyline are uncertain, following changes to plans involving actor Jonathan Majors.

The actress known for her role in Loki was confirmed to be part of the Doctor Who spin-off in July 2024, before filming began last year and continued through December. She shared a report from Variety about her casting on her Instagram story, excitedly writing, “Epic news!”

Gugu Mbatha-Raw has been cast as Salt in The War Between the Land and the Sea. She will portray a member of the Sea Devils, an ancient underwater race that rises from the depths and triggers a worldwide battle with UNIT and the rest of humanity.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Naomie Mbatha-Raw shared that the new series will include both a love story and a storyline involving two different worlds. The romance appears to be between her character, a Sea Devil, and Barclay, played by Russell Tovey, who is an ordinary office worker unexpectedly caught up in a worldwide crisis.

I’m really disappointed to hear that Disney+ and Doctor Who are parting ways! It feels so sudden after two seasons, those fantastic five specials, and even the beginnings of The War Between the Land and the Sea spin-off. From now on, it seems the BBC and Bad Wolf Productions are taking full control of everything Who, which is exciting, but I’m definitely curious to find out where we’ll be able to watch it all around the world going forward.

TopMob recently had an exclusive interview with the show’s creator, Russell T. Davies, who described the series as both “magnificent” and “really beautiful.” Davies, a long-time British sci-fi writer, also mentioned that TWBTLAS will be geared towards a more mature audience than Doctor Who, though it won’t be strictly for adults.

I’m really excited for The War Between the Land and the Sea! It’s going to be fantastic seeing Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Russell Tovey team up, and even better, some familiar faces from Doctor Who are joining them – Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim, and Ruth Madley as Shirley Ann Bingham. It’s a nice little bit of Who nostalgia!

Ravonna Renslayer was a strong supporter of He Who Remains, carrying out his plans at the TVA and helping him win a massive multiversal war. However, He Who Remains changed her memories so she believed she was created by the Time-Keepers to safeguard the Sacred Timeline, causing her to forget she was originally his commander during that war.

After regaining her memories, Renslayer tried to seize control of the TVA, but was eliminated by Hunter X-05, aided by a magically empowered Sylvie. She was last seen in Loki Season 2, confronting Alioth in The Void, and her fate remains unknown.

When Jonathan Majors was originally set to star as Kang in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, many fans expected characters like Alioth and Renslayer to be crucial in bringing him down. Though Alioth—the glowing, shark-like creature—might still appear in Avengers: Doomsday to help defeat Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, Renslayer could be left out of the story. Many viewers may assume she was eliminated when she seemingly fell into Alioth.
