Robert Carradine, an actor known for his role in Lizzie McGuire, has died at the age of 71.

According to Deadline, actor David Carradine died by suicide after a twenty-year battle with bipolar disorder. A statement from his family is included below.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert Carradine, our cherished father, grandfather, uncle, and brother. He was a source of light and joy to everyone who knew him, even during difficult times. We are heartbroken by his loss, especially after his courageous 20-year struggle with Bipolar Disorder. We hope his story will help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and encourage others to seek help. We kindly ask for privacy as we grieve this immense loss. Thank you for your understanding and compassion.

Robert’s brother, Keith Carradine, shared that he wants people to be aware Robert had bipolar disorder, and stressed that “there’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

We want everyone to understand what happened, and there’s absolutely no shame in it. He fought a difficult illness, and I want to remember and celebrate him for that struggle, as well as for the wonderful person he was. He was incredibly talented, and we’ll miss him dearly. We’ll find comfort in remembering his humor, wisdom, and how kind and accepting he always was. That was truly my brother.
