I was so excited to see the 2025 *How to Train Your Dragon*! It was a really cool change to see it brought to life with a mix of live-action and animation, and it still felt like the same magical story we all loved from the 2010 movie. Thankfully, the studio saw how well it did and has already greenlit a sequel! While they’re keeping most of the details secret for now, Mason Thames, who starred in the first one, just let us know that *How to Train Your Dragon 2* is starting production soon. I can’t wait to go back to Berk!
The actor mentioned filming began on November 1st, as he discussed details about *How to Train Your Dragon 2* with *The Direct*. He’s currently promoting the sequel *Black Phone 2*, which is now in theaters. In *How to Train Your Dragon 2*, he’ll be returning as Hiccup, the character who goes from wanting to hunt dragons to befriending one named Toothless, and ultimately helping his village fight a dangerous new threat. The actor then continued:
I’m incredibly excited to revisit this character – it’s a role that’s really important to me. Getting to reprise it and work on the project again is fantastic. I’ve also seen some great ideas and we’re welcoming a lot of talented new people to the team, which makes me really happy.
Okay, so the live-action *How to Train Your Dragon* remake has seriously cleaned up at the box office this year – it’s made over $635 million, actually becoming the most successful film in the whole franchise! It’s wild considering all the previous *HTTYD* movies were animated. But here’s the thing – even though audiences loved it, it’s also the lowest-rated one critically. It only scored 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. For comparison, the original trilogy – the first, second, and third films – all crushed it with scores of 99%, 92%, and 90% respectively. It’s a bit of a head-scratcher, honestly!
‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ Will Try to Surpass the 2014 Sequel’s Success
Universal Pictures
A sequel to *How to Train Your Dragon 2* is planned for release in June 2027, and most of the original cast and filmmakers are expected to return. The live-action film released in 2025 was a big hit for Universal Pictures, which led studio executives to approve the new installment.
Dean DeBlois, who directed all of the animated ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ films, will also direct the new live-action remake. Universal Pictures is likely aiming to recreate the success of ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2,’ the second most popular film in the series, and DeBlois is considered the perfect choice for the job. Producer Mary Parent was questioned about the story, but remained tight-lipped, though she did share her enthusiasm for the project.
I don’t want to reveal too much, but the second installment is particularly meaningful to me and is definitely my favorite of the three. I’m also really excited about how it’s turning out.
