Like Nothing Else On Television

2025 marks the end for several shows, with many being canceled, such as the ABC medical drama “Doctor Odyssey.” Airing just one season before getting canceled in June, when cast options expired, the news has been tough to swallow. Previously cryptic about it on social media, Sean Teale was one of the stars. Now, Joshua Jackson has publicly expressed his feelings regarding this unfortunate turn of events.

In the TV series, Jackson played Dr. Max Bankman, just as many others were hopeful that the high-end cruise ship’s journey wouldn’t come to an end. Before the announcement of its cancellation, he posted a brief message on social media, hinting that ABC had not yet disclosed any information. Now, with the official termination confirmed, his sentiments have changed.

Speaking to People, he looked back at his time on the series, expressing disappointment, as he usually feels when shows are cancelled. He also shed some light on the reality of the entertainment industry.

The gathering was fantastic, and the performance was delightful. However, this industry can be chaotic and challenging, and unfortunately, they haven’t shared the specific reasons why they decided against progressing with it.

Despite the challenging nature of the entertainment world, there remained a glimmer of possibility that “Doctor Odyssey” might return for another season, but unfortunately, that didn’t come to pass, and the series concluded after airing only 18 episodes.

Jackson expresses his hope that fans enjoyed the entire series, including its absurdities, by stating: “Regardless, I truly hope everyone found enjoyment in the series, as well as the quirks and silliness it presented.

In my view, I sincerely hope they enjoyed an equivalent of what we did – a remarkable, extravagant television encounter that felt utterly unique and unparalleled to me.

Although viewers expressed disappointment about the finale’s romantic twists, the tsunami scene was quite dramatic, demonstrating just how extravagant the series “Doctor Odyssey” became. With its witty cameos, unconventional throuple, crossover with Angela Bassett on 9-1-1, and numerous maritime crises that were questioned by medical professionals, the Ryan Murphy production was truly outlandish – and it’s precisely this wildness that made it so captivating for me.

Could it be possible that we might see a resurrection of Doctor Odyssey in the times to come? Despite Jackson’s contract expiring, which typically signals an ending, there’s still room for speculation. The odds may seem slim, but there’s still a glimmer of hope left unsnuffed: the possibility remains alive.

It’s possible they could produce the show with a different person. I’m clueless about their intentions as they haven’t shared them with me. Frankly, I don’t expect its return.

This amazing bundle offers both Disney+ and Hulu for just $1 more than the cost of each service separately. With this package, you can enjoy streaming popular ABC shows such as “Doctor Odyssey,” along with timeless Disney and Pixar classics like “Finding Nemo.” Check it out now!

Given the drawn-out nature of ABC’s announcement, it was almost inevitable that the show would be canceled, yet the disappointment remains just as strong. Just like John Oliver when he petitioned for the renewal of his show, I too share the same sense of sorrow that it didn’t come to fruition. Despite this heartache, at least the show didn’t leave us hanging with a cliffhanger and instead provided a relatively satisfying ending in its two-part finale, which was reminiscent of the dramatic events portrayed in shows like 9-1-1 (with their frequent tsunami and earthquake scenarios).

With it being established that Doctor Odyssey and 9-1-1 share the same universe, there’s a possibility that their nautical characters might reappear (assuming Angela Bassett can avoid setting foot on another boat again).

Dealing with this cancellation is tough, but with streaming services, it feels like Doctor Odyssey has just taken a temporary leave. You can catch up on the entire first season with a Hulu subscription. While there won’t be fresh episodes coming in, it’s definitely more satisfying than having nothing at all.
