Liam Neeson’s Forgotten Action Thriller Quietly Becomes a Streaming Hit on Hulu 3 Years Later

Streaming continues to deliver hits, and the 2023 action thriller Retribution, starring [actor’s name], is the latest example. It’s now among the top 10 most-watched movies on Hulu.

I was checking Hulu today and noticed Retribution had a really strong start, landing at number four in the U.S.! It’s one of two new films that made it into the Top 10 right away – Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire also jumped in at number five. I’m excited to see how these movies do!

What Happens in Retribution?

Retribution is an American remake of the 2015 Spanish-French film, El desconocido. The action thriller was directed by Nimród Antal, who previously directed the 2010 film Predators, a sequel in the popular Predator franchise.

Chris Salmanpour wrote the script for the movie Retribution, a fast-paced thriller. The film features Liam Neeson, along with Noma Dumezweni, Lilly Aspell, Jack Champion, Embeth Davidtz, and Matthew Modine.

In the movie Retribution, Matt Turner (Liam Neeson) receives a terrifying phone call: a bomb has been placed in his car. He’s then forced into a frantic race around the city, completing a list of dangerous tasks as instructed by the caller.

A typical drive turns into a terrifying ordeal for Matt when a bomb is placed in his car, rigged to detonate if his children exit. He’s forced to follow the dangerous commands of a stranger, desperately trying to save his family before time runs out, as described in the film’s synopsis.

Fifteen years after Taken made Liam Neeson a star in action films, Retribution was released. He continued to appear in several action movies following the 2008 success of Taken, including The A-Team (2010), The Grey (2011), and Non-Stop (2014).

As much as I enjoy Liam Neeson, it’s a bit sad to see his action films haven’t been doing as well at the box office recently. Remember when Taken came out and everything just clicked? Well, his latest, Retribution, really struggled. It only made about $18.7 million worldwide, which wasn’t even enough to cover the $20 million it cost to make. It’s a shame, honestly.

Critics didn’t like the movie Retribution very much. It has a 30% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning it’s considered ‘rotten’ by critics. However, viewers seemed to enjoy it more, giving it a score of 67%.

Even though his recent action movies haven’t always done well in theaters, Liam Neeson keeps starring in them, including the new Naked Gun film. Surprisingly, the reboot of the classic Leslie Nielsen comedies was a hit with both critics and audiences, making over $102 million worldwide on a $42 million budget.

Liam Neeson is taking on a horror role, which is unusual for him. He’ll be appearing in a new film alongside Georgina Campbell, known for Barbarian, and Joe Keery, famous from Stranger Things. The movie is adapted from a novel by David Koepp, who also wrote the screenplay.
