The movie starring Liam Neeson is now the most popular title on Netflix. While it received mixed reviews from critics after its release in theaters in 2021, general audiences seemed to enjoy it much more.
Four years after its initial release, The Marksman is currently the most-watched movie on Netflix in the United States. As of today, it’s beating out newer films like Frankenstein (2025), In Your Dreams (2025), A Merry Little Ex-Mas (2025), and Being Eddie (2025) in popularity.
I recently saw this movie with Liam Neeson playing a rancher down on the Arizona border. The story centers around him protecting a young boy from a really dangerous cartel. Honestly, it felt pretty familiar – a lot of the plot points were things I’ve seen before, and critics seemed to agree. It only got a 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which basically means most people didn’t think it brought anything new to the table.
Despite sticking to common action thriller tropes, audiences seemed to enjoy The Marksman, giving it a strong 83% score on the Popcornmeter. Unfortunately, this positive feedback didn’t lead to big profits at the box office, as the film earned about $23 million, which was roughly the same amount it cost to make.
With The Marksman, Liam Neeson continues a trend of action thrillers that began with the huge success of Taken in 2008. The film fits into a series of similar movies he’s made, including Cold Pursuit (2019) and Honest Thief (2020), and was followed by titles like The Ice Road (2021), Blacklight (2022), and Memory (2022).
