Liam Neeson Gives Update On The Naked Gun 2 After $101M Box Office

Following the strong box office performance of the latest Naked Gun movie, Liam Neeson has shared whether Paramount will make a sequel, slated for 2025. Neeson is a well-known actor, famous for roles in films such as Schindler’s List, Star Wars, Gangs of New York, and Love Actually.

I was so excited to see him take on the role of Frank Drebin Jr. in the latest Naked Gun movie! It’s a huge honor to follow in Leslie Nielsen’s footsteps – he was amazing as the original Frank Drebin, not just in the Naked Gun films, but also in the Police Squad TV series. It’s great to see the legacy continue!

While promoting his movie Cold Storage, Liam Neeson was asked by Entertainment Tonight if he’d be interested in making another Naked Gun film. He said he wasn’t sure what the future held for the series and confirmed that he hadn’t been asked to participate in a sequel.

Liam Neeson has expressed interest in making another Naked Gun movie, but only if the script is strong and original cast members like Pamela Anderson and Danny Huston are involved. However, he hasn’t been contacted about a potential new film yet.

To be honest, I’m not aware of any offers. I haven’t received any calls about it. I’d be open to it, of course, if the script was strong and Pamela and Danny Huston were both available. But as far as I know, nothing is happening right now. And I think the film did reasonably well in theaters.

The popular Naked Gun movies actually started as a six-episode TV show called Police Squad! in 1982. Though ABC canceled it, the show’s main character, Frank Drebin, continued in three successful films. Released between 1988 and 1994, The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear, and Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult each earned between $51 million and $86 million in the United States.

The funny plots center on Detective Frank Drebin, who somehow solves crimes even though he’s completely clueless. Years later, Paramount brought the series back, with Liam Neeson stepping into the main role after Leslie Nielsen passed away in 2010.

When The Naked Gun came out in August 2025, directed by Akiva Schaffer, it made $52 million in the United States and $101 million worldwide. Currently, the film has an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Naked Gun Franchise Rotten Tomatoes Scores

Since The Naked Gun came out in the summer of 2025, people have been wondering if a sequel is planned. Last year, producer Seth MacFarlane revealed he’s talked with the movie’s creators and actors about potentially making another film.

Schaffer and Neeson haven’t seemed as hopeful about a sequel, judging by what they’ve said before. The director explained that changes at Paramount influenced the decision to halt development. While Neeson has expressed interest in reprising his role, he previously described the 2025 Naked Gun movie as a standalone project.

The filmmakers have plans for more movies in the series, but Paramount hasn’t said much about them yet. No matter what happens next, fans can revisit the original The Naked Gun anytime on Paramount+ and Prime Video.
