With my latest film, One Battle After Another, possibly heading for awards buzz, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about where movies are at right now. As someone who’s been acting for a while, I feel like I’ve got a pretty unique perspective on what’s happening, especially with things like AI and streaming changing how we all watch films. It makes you wonder what the future holds for the whole movie experience, you know?
In a recent interview with The Times, Leonardo DiCaprio questioned if movie theaters might end up like old jazz clubs – becoming less popular as new forms of entertainment dominate. He noted how quickly the film industry is changing, explaining that documentaries used to be common in theaters, but now dramas are only shown for a limited time before becoming available on streaming services.
I’m really hoping we see more truly creative people get the chance to bring their amazing, original ideas to life on the big screen. Whether that happens, though, is still an open question.
This statement follows Leonardo DiCaprio’s recent comments to Time Magazine where he argued that entertainment created by artificial intelligence can’t truly be considered art.
This technology could really help a new filmmaker create something truly original. I believe that real art always comes from a person’s creativity. You hear these amazing song remixes – like Michael Jackson blended with The Weeknd, or a soulful Al Green-style rendition of an A Tribe Called Quest classic – and you’re blown away at first. But often, these creations have a brief moment of popularity online and then quickly fade away because they lack a deeper connection or human element, no matter how impressive they are technically.
Why Leonardo DiCaprio Will Never Turn to Directing

Warner Bros.
It’s hard to say what the future holds for movies, but Leonardo DiCaprio seems to know what he wants. Unlike Jodie Foster and Sean Penn – celebrated actors who’ve also become successful directors – he says he has no plans to start directing himself.
I’ve been asked about directing, but it’s just not something I’m interested in. I could never reach the level of a director like Martin Scorsese, and I don’t see the point in trying. I’ve always been focused on acting – really diving into characters and understanding them. Honestly, I’d rather be an observer, watching someone like Scorsese work their magic behind the camera, as I told him at a recent Time event.

Their seventh film together will be based on Peter Cameron’s novel, What Happens At Night, and will feature Jennifer Lawrence. The story centers on a couple who journey to Europe to adopt a child, but their trip takes a dark and unexpected turn while staying at a luxurious hotel.
