After several months of anticipation, it’s officially announced that Sophie Turner will indeed portray Lara Croft in the upcoming television series based on Tomb Raider, airing on Amazon Prime. Given my admiration for her performances, particularly in her hit HBO show, I’ve longed for her to secure a role like this for quite some time now.
As a die-hard Game of Thrones fan, I must admit that among all the projects Sophie Turner has undertaken post-GOT, none has caught my eye quite like this one.
Here are two reasons why that statement holds true:
1. We’ve been anticipating this news for such a long time that hearing it now brings a sense of relief. Deadline reported back in November that the actress was in negotiations for the role, but only recently has she been officially confirmed for it.
2. I’m incredibly excited to watch Turner embody this strong character following her impressive portrayal of the intelligent Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones.
Concerning the choice of actors for Turner’s role, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the mastermind behind, author, and executive producer of Tomb Raider, expressed her unbridled enthusiasm, stating in a release:
I’m thrilled to share that the remarkable Sophie Turner will portray Lara in our production! Accompanying her is an exceptional creative team. It’s not every day we get to work on a project of this magnitude featuring a character I admired growing up. Every member of the cast is deeply passionate about Lara, and each one embodies her outrageousness, courage, and humor perfectly. So, dust off your artifacts… Lara Croft is making her return!
In addition to her, Chad Hodge has joined the team as a co-executive producer and joint showrunner. He’ll collaborate with Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Jonathan Van Tulleken, who are set to direct and serve as executive producers.
More to come…
