‘Lanterns’ Trailer Teases the First Green Lantern TV Show

The first original live-action TV series within James Gunn’s new DC Universe is Lanterns, a fresh take on the Green Lantern story. While Peacemaker came from the previous DC Extended Universe, Lanterns is a completely new project. The show, created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and comic book writer Tom King, features a seasoned Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) mentoring John Stewart (Aaron Stewart) as he prepares to become a Green Lantern.

The show takes place in a universe filled with alien space police – Chandler’s character even jokes about one being a squirrel! However, the initial trailer focuses on Earth, showing him training a new partner, Stewart, and then solving a mystery in a small town. You can watch the first preview of Lanterns below.

The show feels less like a traditional superhero story and more like the thrilling Netflix film Rebel Ridge, which also starred Aaron Pierre as a man battling a corrupt police force. While there aren’t many superpowers or Green Lantern costumes, we do see the actual green lantern – the object that powers the rings. Although the iconic Green Lantern oath isn’t spoken, it seems likely that either Chandler or Pierre, or both, will deliver the famous line, “Beware my power!” before the first season ends.

Here is the series’ official synopsis:

The show centers around John Stewart, a new member of the Green Lantern Corps, and veteran Lantern Hal Jordan. Together, these intergalactic law enforcers team up to solve a puzzling murder that takes them to the middle of America.

Lanterns premieres in August on HBO and HBO Max.

The Best Razzie Worst Picture Winners

10. Howard the Duck (1986)

In 1986, other nominees for awards included Blue City, Cobra, Shanghai Surprise, and Under the Cherry Moon. While many modern Marvel movies are enjoyable, Howard the Duck’s reputation as the worst Marvel film is no longer accurate. It’s uniquely unpredictable – chaotic, surprisingly frightening (its villain, the Dark Overlord, is more unsettling than Thanos), and oddly suggestive for a movie about a small, talking duck. Even now, Howard the Duck remains the strangest film Marvel has ever produced.

9. I Know Who Killed Me (2007)

In 2007, other Razzie nominees included Bratz, Daddy Day Camp, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, and Norbit. While I Know Who Killed Me is confusingly plotted and full of strange twists, it’s so bad it’s funny – possibly one of the most unintentionally hilarious studio films in recent years. Despite its flaws, it’s strangely captivating, and I’d happily watch it repeatedly over sitting through Daddy Day Camp or Chuck & Larry even once.

8. Mommie Dearest (1981)

In 1981, other films considered for the Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies) included Endless Love, Heaven’s Gate, The Legend of the Lone Ranger, and Tarzan, the Ape Man. Surprisingly, Heaven’s Gate – a famously overbudget and troubled Western directed by Michael Cimino – wasn’t chosen as the worst film. Perhaps even the Razzies acknowledged some artistic merit in it.

Mommie Dearest, however, was a strange movie. Faye Dunaway portrayed Joan Crawford, mimicking her notoriously difficult behavior. The film, based on Crawford’s daughter’s memoir, depicts Crawford as a harsh and potentially abusive mother, prone to outbursts and obsessed with trivial things like wire hangers. While bizarre and unsettling, it’s also strangely captivating. Unless you’re a devoted Joan Crawford fan, it’s far from the worst movie ever made, even in 1981.

7. Cocktail (1988)

In 1988, several other films competed for attention, including Caddyshack II, Hot to Trot, Mac and Me, and Rambo III. While Cocktail isn’t considered one of Tom Cruise’s best movies, it’s not terrible – it’s a fairly average film with some memorable bartending scenes. It did give us the Beach Boys’ song “Kokomo,” which many people dislike, but is that enough to call it the worst movie of the year, especially when Caddyshack II and Mac and Me were also released? Definitely not.

6. Under the Cherry Moon (1986)

In 1986, several films were nominated for the Razzie Award for Worst Picture, including Blue City, Cobra, Howard the Duck, and Shanghai Surprise. Interestingly, Under the Cherry Moon actually tied with another film for the award. This movie suffered from being Prince’s first attempt at directing and followed his hugely successful Purple Rain, which had a much better soundtrack. The Razzies often criticize actors or musicians who try to do too much, and that seems to be what happened here. While Purple Rain is the clear choice for a Prince film to watch, Under the Cherry Moon is worth seeing eventually—especially compared to the almost unwatchable Shanghai Surprise, starring Madonna and Sean Penn.

5. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (2012)

In 2012, other Razzie nominees included Battleship, The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure, That’s My Boy, and A Thousand Words. It’s understandable why Hollywood started splitting popular young adult book series into two movies to maximize profits – it was a frustrating trend. And the Twilight films were an easy target for criticism, given their success and occasionally awkward effects. However, the details matter. While many big-budget blockbusters are predictable and safe, Breaking Dawn – Part 2 was a surprisingly unique and heartfelt mainstream film. It’s admittedly a bit odd that it focuses so intensely on magic, fate, and babies, but those feelings are expressed with genuine sincerity. It’s no surprise that its fans are so devoted in return.

4. Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)

In 1985, other films nominated for Worst Picture included Fever Pitch, Revolution, Rocky IV, and Year of the Dragon. Sylvester Stallone was a frequent target of the Razzie Awards throughout the 80s and 90s—both of his 1985 movies received nominations for Worst Picture. He was nominated for Worst Actor eleven times across those two decades, and even won Worst Actor of the 80s and Worst Actor of the 2000s. While Stallone certainly starred in some bad films—especially 1993’s Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot—naming Rambo the worst film of 1985 seems like a bit of an exaggeration, considering its cultural impact and status as a classic 80s action movie.

3. Freddy Got Fingered (2001)

In 2001, the films Driven, Glitter, Pearl Harbor, and 3000 Miles to Graceland were also nominated for awards. Meanwhile, comedian Tom Green took a risk with his first major movie, Freddy Got Fingered, after gaining a following on MTV. Most critics didn’t enjoy it; Roger Ebert famously declared it was far worse than any movie deserving of mention.

The Razzies (awards for the worst films) strongly disliked Freddy Got Fingered, nominating it for several awards and awarding it five, including Worst Picture. While many found it simply awful, some viewed it as a surprisingly clever prank on Hollywood and anyone who watched it. Though it doesn’t work as a typical Hollywood comedy, it’s arguably a successful attempt to deliberately shock and provoke audiences.

2. Showgirls (1995)

In 1995, the other films nominated for the Razzie Worst Picture award were Congo, It’s Pat, The Scarlet Letter, and Waterworld. While Showgirls was widely considered the worst film of the year at the time, it’s gained a cult following and likely wouldn’t win if voted on today. In fact, Congo might be an even more undeserving nominee. It’s interesting to note how many Razzie winners have become cult classics – you could easily create a film festival featuring just those titles!

1. Cats (2019)

I remember when Cats came out in 2019 – it was nominated alongside films like The Fanatic, The Haunting of Sharon Tate, A Madea Family Funeral, and Rambo: Last Blood. Honestly, some people called it a bad movie, but I think it’s something truly special. It’s just… different. Years later, I’m still puzzling over so many things! Like, why do some of the cats have human hands? What happened to all the people? And what is hot milk soup? Poor Jennifer Hudson’s runny nose is a constant mystery, and why does Idris Elba seem half-naked? Plus, Taylor Swift is rocking heels while everyone else is barefoot! These questions will live in my head forever, and you know what? I absolutely love that about this movie.
