Landman Season 2: The Offshore Rig Problem and Rebecca’s Plan Revealed

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 7 of Landman. While the latest episode largely focused on the romantic relationships of characters like Cooper, Ariana, Tommy, and Angela, a significant development regarding M-Tex’s offshore natural gas rig occurred that could have major implications for the rest of the season.

Throughout the first season of Landman, Tommy, Cami, and the rest of the cast have been focused on an offshore gas rig. After a hurricane destroyed it, Monty secretly kept the insurance payout before his death. This left M-Tex responsible for the repairs, but they struggled to find the funds quickly enough. However, episode 7 of Landman season 2 dramatically shifted the circumstances.

The Offshore Gas Rig In Landman Season 2 Had Blown Out Before The Hurricane

After Rebecca stayed over, Charlie told her the offshore natural gas rig had very little chance of being profitable, only about 10%, even if they drilled. He also clarified that while the rig did experience a blowout, it wasn’t caused by the hurricane – it just happened around the same time. This means M-Tex isn’t guaranteed to make any money from the rig and could lose millions trying to fix it.

Charlie wasn’t sure what caused the gas rig to fail – there are many possible geological reasons. The well might have run out of gas, caved in, or experienced some other issue. What he did know was that the rig wasn’t getting enough gas, and fixing it would be a risky investment for M-Tex. M-Tex’s managers had previously been confident that the rig would quickly become profitable once repairs were complete.

Based on what they learned, Rebecca and Nate believed Monty had a deliberate strategy. Instead of fixing the damaged gas rig, Monty kept the insurance money because he thought he’d be more profitable by battling the insurance company in court. Repairing the rig only had a small chance of success – about 10% – so he used the insurance payout to invest in land in the Permian Basin, where he saw a better opportunity to make money.

Rebecca & Nate Are Going To Take The Insurance Claim To Court, But They Have To Convince Cami First

In season 2, episode 7 of Landman, Charlie’s discovery will significantly alter M-Tex’s plans for the remainder of the season. Following Monty’s example, Rebecca and Nate have chosen to pursue legal action against the insurance company instead of taking a loan from Gallino to repair the wells. They believe, as Monty did, that M-Tex has a stronger chance of success in court than by attempting to rebuild the rig.

Rebecca and Nate discussed their legal strategy. Rebecca pointed out issues with the insurance company, specifically that they paid Monty directly. She also explained her plan to appeal to a jury of working-class people. Nate added that he intends to prolong the case until M-Tex can either gather enough money for a settlement or fix the oil rig without needing a loan.

Before Nate and Rebecca can proceed with their lawsuit, they need to get Cami on board, which won’t be easy. Cami currently fully supports working with Gallino, trusts him despite his connections to a cartel, and likely disagrees with Nate and Rebecca. Furthermore, Gallino might discourage Cami from suing because he wants her to take the loan – a move that would allow him to enter the oil industry and keep controlling her.

The latest episode of Landman season 2 has created a major power struggle within M-Tex. Rebecca and Nate have a solid plan, but Cami’s choices could turn her into an antagonist. If she supports Gallino, it would give him everything he wants and tie M-Tex to the cartel. Tommy will probably side with Rebecca and Nate, suggesting a battle for control of M-Tex before the season ends.
