Kyle Chandler Opens Up About His Experience Shooting DC’s Lanterns

In 2026, the DC Universe is growing with a new TV series called Lanterns, featuring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as well-known DC superheroes. The show will focus on the established hero Hal Jordan (Chandler) and newcomer John Stewart (Pierre). Though a specific release date for HBO and Max hasn’t been announced, Kyle Chandler, known from Friday Night Lights, has shared how much he enjoyed filming the series.

About a year ago, a first glimpse was shared of the two main actors in an upcoming series. They play space police officers who find themselves investigating a murder on Earth, specifically in the American heartland. Neither actor revealed much about the plot, though Nathan Fillion is known for his role as the Green Lantern, Guy Gardner, in Superman. Kyle Chandler recently appeared on TODAY to talk about the project, and he described his experience as very positive.

I honestly had more fun working on this project than anything else I’ve done. Everyone involved, from the leads to the crew, was fantastic. I especially want to commend Chris Mundy and the producers at DC – it was a truly excellent experience, and I have high hopes that the show will be just as great.

Okay, so I just saw a quick preview of the upcoming Lanterns series, and let me tell you, it’s intense! Hal Jordan and John Stewart aren’t exactly bonding – in fact, Hal basically tries to drive John off a cliff! Thankfully, John’s got a Green Lantern ring, so he probably survives. HBO dropped the clip to get us hyped for their 2026 shows, and honestly, it worked. I’m definitely intrigued!

Despite any challenges, Kyle Chandler seemed to really enjoy making the new show. He highlighted two of his fellow cast members, calling them “fantastic” to work with. He then shared:

Aaron Pierre, I worked with. He and I had a great time. Kelly Macdonald — it was just fantastic.

Following the casting of Chandler as Hal Jordan and Pierre as John Stewart, Kelly MacDonald, known from Boardwalk Empire, joined the cast of Lanterns in 2024. She plays Sheriff Kerry, a character created specifically for the series, unlike many of the roles based on existing DC Comics figures.

Without giving away too much about the story for those who aren’t familiar with it, the cast also includes Jason Ritter (from Matlock) as Billy Macon, Sheriff Kelly’s wife; Garett Dillahunt as a charismatic but dangerous character who might be a familiar name to DC fans; Ulrich Thomsen (The Blacklist) as Sinestro; Paul Ben-Victor (Entourage) as an alien named Antaan; Nicole Ari Parker (Empire) as John Stewart’s mother; and J. Alphonse Nicholson (P-Valley) and Sherman August (Stranger Things) who will play John’s father at different ages – Nicholson as the younger version and August as the present-day version.

Nathan Fillion is returning as Guy Gardner, a character he previously played in both Superman and an episode of John Cena’s Peacemaker. He’s hinted that his portrayal of the character will be different in the upcoming series Lanterns, though it’s unclear if that includes a change in appearance – many viewers commented on his wig in Superman. It’s also yet to be determined if any Green Lantern characters will appear in the Supergirl movie, scheduled for release in June 2026.

Originally planned for early 2026, the release of Lanterns has been pushed back to late summer, potentially after Supergirl hits theaters. While many details are still unknown, producer Peter Safran shared that actor Kyle Chandler enjoyed working with the rest of the cast.
