‘Krypto’s Never Going To Be A ‘Good Dog.’ Why James Gunn Still Says Supergirl’s Different From Superman

Now that Superman and Creature Commandos have launched the first part of the new DC Universe, and Peacemaker season two surprised us all, we have a lot of great DC movies to look forward to. Of all the films planned for 2026, I’m most excited about James Watkins’ Clayface, but I’m also really eager to see Milly Alcock as Supergirl in Craig Gillespie’s film. I’m especially looking forward to seeing the relationship between Kara and Ruthye develop, along with the adorable Krypto in action!

The super-dog, inspired by James Gunn’s real-life pet, wasn’t exactly friendly to Superman in the recent movie – and that’s because it’s not his dog. He did, however, rescue Superman and easily defeat Lex Luthor, evening the score. But the new Supergirl trailer shows he still dislikes Kara’s cousin, and doesn’t hesitate to show it, even going so far as to urinate on him at the Daily Planet.

At the trailer reveal event during CCXP 25 in Brazil (as reported by ScreenRant), James Gunn discussed what will happen with Krypto when the movie comes out. This news likely won’t surprise fans, especially considering the scene where Krypto pees in the trailer.

This dog isn’t well-behaved – he’s actually quite a handful. He consistently causes trouble. The thing is, Kara adores him, but Clark finds him very irritating.

It’s hard not to root for Kara here – Krypto is just so adorable and deserves all the pets and attention!

So, James Gunn seems to be suggesting Krypto’s good behavior is mostly reserved for when he’s with Superman. He’s a bit of a wild card around Lex Luthor, apparently! Don’t expect a perfectly-trained pup in this new adventure, though. The fun part is, even when Krypto does misbehave, Supergirl will still shower him with affection, which is a much more forgiving dynamic than dealing with Superman’s grumpy side.

Expect to see Krypto causing plenty of trouble in the upcoming Supergirl movie! He’ll be joining Kara and Eve Ridley’s Ruthye Marye Knoll on an epic journey across the galaxy, seeking both revenge and justice. Hopefully, Krypto will get a chance to bite the villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills (played by Matthias Schoenaerts), where it hurts! You can get a first look at the movie and Krypto in the teaser trailer below.

James Gunn’s dog, Ozu, famously reacted wildly to seeing the character Krypto on screen. It will be interesting to see if he has the same reaction to the new Supergirl movie, or if he’s become used to seeing animated versions of himself by now.

Moviegoers can judge for themselves if Krypto is a good dog, or the best dog, when Supergirl hits theaters on June 26, 2026.
