Kristin Kreuk Officially Unveils First Look At Debut Comic Book

Kristin Kreuk first became well-known for playing Lana Lang, the love interest of young Clark Kent, in the popular series about Superman’s early life. Now, she’s returning to projects based on comic books, but in a way that might surprise her fans.

I’m so excited about Kristin Kreuk’s new comic book series with Titan Comics! From what I’ve heard, it’s going to be a five-issue run that’s a really fun mix of historical settings, funny moments, and genuinely creepy horror – sounds amazing!

In the early 1800s, during conflicts between rival fur traders, Dashiell Carlyle unexpectedly develops magical powers – and learns he isn’t the only one. He’s drawn into a secret group that wants to use magic to create a perfect society, but Dashiell soon realizes their vision could come with a terrible price.

The story takes place in a harsh and brutal world, full of violence and darkness. However, this is offset by moments of wonder and exploration. The plot moves quickly, and characters aren’t simply good or evil – they exist in shades of grey. Think of it as a blend of the intensity of The Revenant with the epic feel of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. It’s a passionate tribute to a remote, icy landscape, offering a unique and captivating experience that’s both strange and beautiful.

The comic book Black Star also introduces readers to the writing team of Peter Mooney and Eric Putzer, who collaborated with Amanda Kreuk. Joe Bacardo, an artist known for his work on The Hexiles, provided the artwork and designed one of the four alternate covers for the first issue, recently released by Titan Comics.

Black Star Is A Personal Project For Its Creators

If you’re wondering why Kristin Kreuk chose to write a comic book, the key is that Black Star takes place in Winnipeg, Canada. The actor, who is Canadian herself, met her fellow writers there, and the city ultimately inspired their story.

According to actress Kreuk, the idea for Black Star originated while she, Peter, and Eric were filming the show Burden of Truth in Winnipeg. They became fascinated with the city’s history and, enjoying their working relationship, spent their free time crafting a story about the hidden magic and history they believed existed beneath Winnipeg, influencing the city and unseen conflicts.

Burden of Truth was a legal drama that ran on The CW from 2018 to 2021. Created by Brad Simpson, the show starred Kristin Kreuk as a lawyer who goes back to her small hometown for a case. While there, she reconnects with an old friend, Peter Mooney, who is the local prosecutor.

Mooney, originally from Winnipeg, explains the importance of creating Black Star alongside Sheila Kreuk and Eric Putzer.

Mooney explains that visitors to Winnipeg often miss what makes it special, focusing instead on its harshness. But Kristin and Eric immediately understood the city’s unique, quirky charm. Their work isn’t about rewriting history, but about revealing a forgotten piece of it—a strange and imaginative story that helps explain Winnipeg’s character today.

Putzer, who worked with Kreuk and Mooney on the show Burden of Truth, explains why they chose comic books for Black Star. He believes comics offer a unique connection with readers because they control the pace and how information is revealed. For a story exploring power and what it means to be human, they wanted readers to be fully engaged and feel like a part of the experience.

She recently appeared in a short-lived drama on Fox, which was based on novels by L. R. Wright. Before that, she returned to The CW three years after her time on Smallville ended in 2009, taking a leading role in a modern crime thriller reimagining of Beauty and the Beast.

Black Star #1 releases in stores and on digital devices on July 29.
