Kristen Stewart Wants To Direct Twilight Reboot with “Huge Budget”

One of the actors from the popular movie series Twilight is interested in revisiting and potentially remaking the films. The series began as a set of books by Stephenie Meyer, which Summit Entertainment then turned into movies, starring Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan and Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen.

It’s been over 13 years since the last Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn Part 2, came out. Kristen Stewart recently told ET that she’d be open to working on a Twilight reboot, especially now that she’s gained experience directing her first feature film, The Chronology of Water.

At the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Kristen Stewart playfully considered the idea of remaking Twilight with a much larger budget and more creative support. She became increasingly enthusiastic about the possibility, eventually declaring, “Yes, I would remake it! I’m in, I’m committed!”

If we had the resources and encouragement, I’d be thrilled to revisit this project. I’m definitely on board with doing a remake – I’m fully committed to it!

Stewart is careful not to diminish the work of the original directors – Catherine Hardwicke, Chris Weitz, David Slade, and Bill Condon – because she appreciates their unique contributions to the series.

She described the cast as genuinely themselves – a bit quirky and energetic. She also noted that all the directors were fully engaged and dedicated to making Twilight a success, even though, at the time, they were still figuring things out before the series became popular.

I really admire the work of directors like Catherine Hardwicke and Chris Weitz on those films. They each brought their own unique, quirky energy to the projects, and you could feel they were still discovering their style and voice before becoming widely known.

While she’d appeared in films such as Panic Room and Speak before, it was Twilight that really made her famous and launched her career to the next level.

The five Twilight Saga movies, released between 2008 and 2012, earned over $3.3 billion worldwide. While fans loved the series, critics were less impressed, giving the films ratings between 26% and 49% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Kristen Stewart became known for her roles in films like The Runaways, Snow White and the Huntsman, Charlie’s Angels, and Spencer, for which she received an Oscar nomination. More recently, she’s also started directing. After gaining experience with music videos and short films, she directed her first feature-length movie, The Chronology of Water, in 2025.

The movie Twilight helped launch the careers of several actors, notably Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, and Anna Kendrick.

For dedicated fans, the story of Twilight isn’t finished. In 2020, Stephenie Meyer released Midnight Sun, a retelling of the first book, but this time told from Edward’s perspective. This book was a long time in the making, and its development wasn’t without issues—early drafts of chapters were actually leaked online.

Four years after the book’s release, Netflix revealed plans to create an animated TV series based on Midnight Sun. Sinead Daly will write the show and serve as an executive producer, alongside Meyer, Meghan Hibbett, Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen, Erik Feig, Samie Kim Falvey, and Emily Wissink.

We don’t know exactly where the show stands in terms of production, but if Kristen Stewart wanted to, she could potentially direct an episode, especially given her connection to the vampire world.

Because the planned TV show will be based on the first Twilight book, making a live-action movie remake would create conflicts with those plans. If the Midnight Sun series does well, there’s a good chance the other books in the series will be adapted for TV as well. Stephanie Meyer has mentioned she intends to write more books, giving Lionsgate Television a clear path to continue the show for as long as she does.

Although a remake of the Twilight films isn’t currently planned, the studio is aware that Kristen Stewart would be interested in directing a future version if the chance ever comes up.
