Kevin Smith’s Dogma Resurges Ahead of Sequel

The comedy film Dogma, starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, is currently gaining popularity on streaming platforms. Despite causing controversy when it came out in 1999 for its satirical take on religion, it’s now the third most-watched movie on the Apple TV store, according to data from FlixPatrol.

Interest is growing again as fans eagerly anticipate any news about a potential sequel. Kevin Smith revealed plans for Dogma 2 last year, suggesting Matt Damon and Ben Affleck might reprise their roles as fallen angels, but there haven’t been many solid details released since then.

The film Dogma was difficult to find for years because the rights were held by Harvey Weinstein. Now, it’s been re-released on Ultra HD Blu-ray, but isn’t available to stream. However, it’s experiencing a comeback thanks to digital sales on platforms like Amazon, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.

Kevin Smith Is Still Trying to Make Dogma 2

Still, fans are wondering what happened to Dogma 2. .

Smith explained that rewatching Dogma is both inspiring and motivating. He’s currently working on a sequel, timed to coincide with the film’s 25th anniversary. While the anniversary marks 25 years since the film’s release, production actually began in 1998, meaning he’s been developing the project for around 27 years. He added that he wrote the original script when he was 23, just before making Clerks.

If Dogma 2 happens, it’s been a project decades in the making. Originally, it was conceived as God, and these characters and their story have been with me for over 30 years. Revisiting them now, without any prior intention, has been incredibly fun and spontaneous. It’s a completely creative impulse, and the audience’s reaction every night fuels that energy.

How Dogma 2 Could Handle Alan Rickman’s Death

A challenge for the upcoming film Dogma 2 is finding a replacement for Alan Rickman, who memorably played the character Metatron – the voice of God – in the first Dogma. Kevin Smith has said he’s considered someone unexpected for the part.

I really had Helen Mirren in mind while writing this,” Smith explained. “She has a similar energy to Alan [Rickman]. She’s not playing the exact same character as Alan did, but she embodies that role in this film. I met her years ago at an Empire movie awards event with Alan. When I realized Alan wasn’t available, I even considered Adam Driver because he reminded me of a younger, taller version of Alan.”

“I want to write it for Helen Mirren,” Smith said. “She is incredibly Alan-adjacent. She’s not playing Metatron, but she plays this movie’s version of Metatron. For me, I met her years ago with Alan at this Empire movie awards ceremony. When I was thinking, ‘Well, I don’t have Alan,’ at one point I was like, ‘Well, Adam Driver looks like a young Alan Rickman, just taller.’

I initially dismissed the idea, but then I reconsidered. I realized I’d actually had a brief, funny connection with Helen Mirren and Alan – a small moment that stuck with me. As a writer, and someone who loves a good story, I tend to latch onto connections like that and build on them. That little memory really made me think, and I started picturing Helen Mirren in the role, so I decided to write it specifically with her in mind.
