This filmmaker is known for consistently creating movies his own way, sticking to his unique vision. While fans have been eagerly awaiting a sequel to his film Dogma, he’s currently focused on an entirely different project.
In an interview with MovieWeb, Smith talked about his ideas for a Dogma sequel. He then revealed that a new, unannounced project had to take priority, even though he’s eager to finish both Dogma 2 and this other project. Smith explained:
I’m having fun working on Dogma 2, but I temporarily switched to a different project. I struggled with the idea of making a sequel for a long time, almost convincing myself it wouldn’t happen. But then I decided to listen to my creative impulses and explore something new. This new project felt more refined, or ‘classier,’ in my mind, even though a Dogma sequel could be too. It felt like building on something already built on something else. Ultimately, that creative urge won out, and I’m focusing on this new project before returning to Dogma 2.
What Is Kevin Smith’s Secret New Movie Project?

Allan Amato
Kevin Smith is famous for films like Clerks, Mallrats, and Dogma, but there’s another project he’s particularly passionate about – one that’s a departure for him and has a large budget, which isn’t typical for his work. He explained:
As a film buff, I’m working on a period piece, and honestly, recreating that world is a huge undertaking – it always looks incredibly costly, and it is! I’m trying to be resourceful, though. The story is set in Berkeley and Hollywood, and thankfully a lot of those locations still exist, thanks to preservation efforts. It’s amazing how easily you can transport the audience back in time – point the camera one way, and it instantly feels like 1954-1961, which is when my film is set.
My own life experiences are really shaping how I approach this project, which is useful since I’m writing about a time period I didn’t live through and honestly dislike. I really hated shows like Happy Days growing up – it felt like a struggle to watch that stuff. It’s ironic because this film, which might be seen as my ‘grown-up’ or more serious work, is actually set in an era I have no fondness for at all.
Interestingly, a highly productive independent filmmaker has suggested his latest film might need a more traditional release strategy. He finished by saying:
Look, I’m a big Kevin Smith fan, I really am. But honestly, his films feel a little too personal, a little too… independent, to be treated like a major studio production. Ideally, if I were involved, we’d give it a more traditional movie-making approach. That said, I’m really enjoying working on this project so far – I’m about halfway through the script, currently on page 60.
