Keira Knightley, famous for her roles in films like *Pride & Prejudice*, will be starring in a new audiobook based on the world created by J.K. Rowling. The acclaimed actress, who has been nominated for two Oscars, is making her first appearance in an Audible audiobook.
Keira Knightley, who voices Dolores Umbridge in the *Harry Potter* films starting with the fifth book, says she didn’t realize J.K. Rowling had recently faced criticism. According to Entertainment Weekly, Knightley was unaware of the calls to boycott Rowling due to her comments about the LGBTQ+ community.
Keira Knightley said she wasn’t aware of the boycott surrounding J.K. Rowling, sparked by the author’s controversial views on transgender actors, and expressed regret upon learning about it. The boycott has led to several actors, including Emma Watson, publicly distancing themselves from Rowling.
Knightley believes we’re currently facing a time where learning to coexist is essential. She noted that everyone holds different viewpoints and expressed hope that mutual respect can prevail.
In 2020, J.K. Rowling published a lengthy essay on her website claiming that the transgender rights movement was causing harm to cisgender women. More recently, in 2023, she posted on X (formerly Twitter) that she would rather serve a two-year prison sentence than be forced to acknowledge transgender women’s gender identities. Many interpreted this as a refusal to recognize trans women as women.
Harry Potter Stars Offer Support to the Trans Community
Both Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson have publicly supported the LGBTQ+ community. After J.K. Rowling published an essay in 2020, Radcliffe made a statement affirming that transgender women are women, and that denying this disrespects transgender people’s identities and worth.
Following a statement by Emma Watson, known for playing Hermione Granger in the *Harry Potter* films, expressing continued affection for J.K. Rowling despite disagreeing on transgender rights, Rowling responded critically on X (formerly Twitter). Rowling suggested Watson lacks understanding of real-world struggles due to her privileged upbringing, implying Watson hasn’t faced hardships like homelessness or navigating public services without the benefits of wealth and fame. She also claimed Watson is unaware of her own lack of experience with everyday life.
The new audio series will feature Hugh Laurie as Albus Dumbledore, Matthew Macfadyen as Lord Voldemort, Riz Ahmed as Professor Snape, James McAvoy as Professor Mad-Eye Moody, and Michelle Gomez as Professor McGonagall, alongside previously announced cast members. The first part, based on *Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone*, will be released on November 9th.
