Many people know the actor from the hit movie The Matrix, but he was in another great cyberpunk film, Johnny Mnemonic, even before that. Now, thirty years later, Johnny Mnemonic is coming to Netflix.
Keanu Reeves’s movie, Johnny Mnemonic, is coming to Netflix on January 1, 2026. First released in 1995, the film takes place in a dark and technologically advanced future – our 2021 – where powerful corporations rule. Reeves plays a data courier with a special brain implant that lets him store sensitive information. However, there’s a catch: the data is lethal, and he has just 48 hours to deliver it or it will kill him.
He must locate the passwords needed to access crucial data and protect himself, aided by Jane (Dina Meyer), a highly advanced bodyguard. Though their task appears straightforward, they are relentlessly pursued through a dark, futuristic world by the dangerous gangster Shinji (Denis Akiyama) and the cold-hearted businessman Takahashi (Takeshi Kitano).
Following the huge success of Keanu Reeves’ earlier film, Sony invested $26 million in Johnny Mnemonic, hoping for another blockbuster. Director Robert Longo and writer William Gibson were given the opportunity to adapt their story for a wide audience. However, disagreements between the creative team and the studio led to significant changes. The film was re-edited without Longo’s input, transforming it into a more conventional action movie and losing the original ironic tone he’d envisioned.
The issues during production foreshadowed the film Johnny Mnemonic‘s disappointing reception. It didn’t achieve the broad popularity the studio expected, and critics and audiences largely disliked it. Currently, the film holds a 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on reviews from critics, and viewers aren’t much more enthusiastic, giving it a 31% approval rating from over 50,000 reviews.
4 Years Later, Reeves Proved Himself with a Sci-Fi Masterpiece
While Johnny Mnemonic didn’t quite match the success of Speed or immediately establish Keanu Reeves as a sci-fi action star, he soon proved his abilities in other roles. Just four years later, a different role became a turning point for Reeves, ultimately leading to him becoming the highest-paid actor for a film, thanks to the sequels The Matrix: Reloaded and Revolutions.
Keanu Reeves has recently reaffirmed his status as an action star with his role as John Wick. The first John Wick movie, released in 2014, was a big hit, and the latest installment, Chapter 4, has become the highest-grossing film in the series, demonstrating the franchise’s lasting popularity.
Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Mnemonic arrives on Netflix on Jan. 1, 2026.
