As the first season of Marshals ends, Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) is facing new challenges, particularly after someone tries to kill a character from Yellowstone. While Yellowstone had its share of danger, Marshals explores a completely different side of the story. Kayce and his team are dealing with high stakes, and a familiar face will play a key role in what happens next.
The season finale of CBS’s Marshals will see an attempt on the life of Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), the chairman of Broken Rock. Kayce will step in to protect him while the Marshals try to find out who is responsible. Later, a militia attack will force the team to investigate, and Kayce will uncover a conspiracy that’s bigger than they initially thought.
Season one of Marshals really expands Kayce’s story, throwing him into a high-pressure situation. While some familiar characters appear, the season mostly focuses on introducing the new team of US Marshals Kayce is working with. Throughout the season, we’ve also seen how the storylines of Marshals and Yellowstone are beginning to connect, largely through the actions of Rainwater.
The chairman of Broken Rock has played a significant role in both Marshals and Yellowstone. The new CBS series offers the creative team an opportunity to further develop his character. His presence in the spinoff strengthens the connection to Yellowstone beyond the Dutton family, helping viewers stay immersed in the world of the franchise.
Rainwater has always faced threats in the world of Yellowstone, but the danger is escalating now that he’s dealing with even more formidable enemies on Marshals. Because of his long history with the Yellowstone story, any attempt on Rainwater’s life will inevitably draw Kayce into the conflict, both as a lawman and on a personal level, significantly increasing the tension.
Even though Marshals has always shown Kayce as a good guy, giving him more responsibilities as both a protector and an investigator will create more opportunities for the character and let actor Luke Grimes showcase his talent. While Marshals might be hinting at another setback for Kayce, it seems more probable that the show is building towards a more complex and interesting story arc for him.
Now that season 2 of Marshals is confirmed and it appears Rainwater survived the assassination attempt, the season finale seems to be building towards a bigger story. Seeing Kayce save Rainwater and learn more about the situation will lead to a very complex ending for season 1 of Marshals.
