Kathryn Newton Confirms Big Little Lies Season 3 Return Despite Major Time Jump

As a film and TV buff, I’ve noticed it’s pretty common now for a hit limited series to get expanded into a full show. But honestly, it feels like was one of the very first to really pull that off, and I always remember it being a bit of a trailblazer in that respect.

The HBO series, based on Liane Moriarty’s popular novel, was a big hit when it first aired in 2017. While the first season won many awards, the second season didn’t quite measure up, even though the show still benefited from a strong connection between its talented cast members. Fans have been hoping for a third season for years, and recently, original star Kathryn Newton told People she’s on board to return.

At the 2025 WWD Honors, Laura Dern discussed the possibility of a third season of Big Little Lies, sharing how much the show meant to her. She hinted that it’s likely happening, saying, “I can tease that I think it’s happening.” However, she added she’ll only be certain when filming begins. She expressed her enthusiasm about potentially working with her co-stars again, stating, “That show changed my life.”

The actress began her career with a short role on All My Children and later appeared in popular shows like Supernatural. On Supernatural, she played the daughter of Jimmy Novak, a deeply religious character chosen by the angel Castiel to be his vessel. Despite only being in six episodes, her performance resonated with fans who hoped to see her continue in a potential spin-off, Wayward Sisters.

She considers her role in Big Little Lies to be her major breakthrough, and speaks highly of the show’s creator and talented cast. She explained that working with director Jean-Marc Vallée set a high standard for her future collaborations. “I’ve been searching for that same creative energy with directors and fellow actors ever since,” she said. “That show, and those incredible women, really opened up opportunities for me.”

I’ve stayed close to those friends, and that’s really made a big difference in my life. It’s like a lot of people make friends in middle school, then grow apart, and make new friends in college. But with them, it’s different – we’ve stayed friends all this time.

The popular series Big Little Lies featured a talented cast including Reese Witherspoon, Zoë Kravitz, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, and Shailene Woodley, with Meryl Streep appearing in the third season. Kathryn Newton played Abigail Carson, the daughter of Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) from her previous marriage to Nathan (James Tupper).

After gaining recognition in Big Little Lies, Kathryn Newton has taken on several high-profile roles. She became known as Cassie Lang, Ant-Man’s daughter, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starred in The Society, and appeared in a major role within an acclaimed ensemble cast.

Big Little Lies Season 3 Will Have a Big Time Jump

It’s been six years since the last season aired, and the actors – particularly the younger ones – have grown up a lot. The new season will reflect these changes. Unlike Season 2, which didn’t have a book to build on, this season will be based on a sequel novel by author Liane Moriarty, announced in September 2024. She’s also hinted that the story will jump forward in time.

I wrote Big Little Lies while my own children were young, and the story’s characters were just beginning kindergarten. Now that my kids are teenagers, they’re giving me plenty of inspiration for a new story. I’m currently working on a sequel that follows those children as teenagers, and their mothers as the parents navigating those years. The book is scheduled to come out in 2026, but there’s no confirmed release date for a third season of the show yet.
