
She’s a truly accomplished actress. Having worked for over six decades and appeared in more than 140 films and TV shows, she recently shared that she’s been having trouble with her vision.
Judi Dench has publicly shared that her declining vision has led her to reduce her acting work. The acclaimed actress previously disclosed she was losing her sight, and in a recent interview, she explained that her macular degeneration has progressed.
The actress recently sat down for an interview with Sir Ian McKellen. The two have worked together on several projects over the years and have been friends for a long time. They first appeared together in a production of Macbeth back in 1979. More recently, they both starred in the 2019 film adaptation of the musical Cats, which unfortunately received negative reviews.
Dench explained she wasn’t visible on camera because of her failing eyesight. McKellen playfully suggested they could see her, and she responded that while she could make out his shape – and recognized his ‘Macbeth’ scarf – she was no longer able to recognize people.
The Shakespeare in Love actress continued, “I can’t see the television, I can’t see to read.”
The actor known for The Lord of the Rings playfully asked a friend if she ever feels compelled to greet random people as if they were old acquaintances. She responded with a laugh, admitting that she occasionally does!
The actress recently revealed she’s losing her eyesight, even at the age of 90. When asked about taking on any future acting roles in May 2024, she responded, “No, I can’t even see.”
Judi Dench’s Final Role Is a Streaming Hit
The actress has had a long and successful career, culminating in a recent Christmas film. This movie is a modern take on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, titled Spirited, and features a comedic cast including Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, Rose Byrne, Octavia Spencer, and Tracy Morgan.
Despite being a recent release, the Christmas movie Spirited has been a hit with both movie critics and general audiences. It currently has a 70% rating from critics and an 80% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and has recently become popular on streaming platforms again, three years after its initial release.
The movie is doing well and currently ranks sixth worldwide on Apple TV. It’s behind several other popular titles, including the comedies The Family Plan and Highest 2 Lowest, Matthew McConaughey’s The Lost Bus, and the adventure film Fountain of Youth. In the United States, it’s in third place, only behind The Family Plan 2 and another unnamed film.
