Josh Hutcherson Explained Why He Does Have FOMO As New Hunger Games Movies Get Made

As a huge movie fan, I remember when The Hunger Games first came out – it was everywhere! The films really brought the world of Panem to life, and of course, launched Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson into superstardom. Speaking of Josh, he played Peeta Mellark, who everyone loved, and he recently shared that he’s actually feeling a little FOMO now that they’re making new Hunger Games movies!

The world of The Hunger Games is back in cinemas with The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which did well in theaters. Now, another prequel movie based on the story of Haymitch Abernathy, called Sunrise on the Reaping, is in the works. Actor Josh Hutcherson recently shared his thoughts with ET’s TikTok about the series continuing without him, explaining how he feels about it.

It’s a complicated feeling. I’m really glad I helped create something that can continue with new versions, actors, and storylines. But I also feel nostalgic and miss it – it was a really great period in my life.

It’s understandable why he feels this way. He dedicated years to the original Hunger Games films (now available on HBO Max) and, while he’s proud of what they accomplished, he misses being involved in the exciting world of Panem. He looks back on that time with fondness.

It’s wonderful to hear how much Hutcherson cherishes his memories of filming the Hunger Games movies. Despite the long hours spent making and promoting all four films, and the intense fame that came with them, he still looks back on the experience with fondness.

You can start streaming with HBO Max for as little as $10.99 per month. It’s the place to watch the original Hunger Games films, and a subscription gives you access to a huge library of movies, shows, documentaries, and more. Check out their current deals!

Spoilers for Sunrise on the Reaping ahead!

As a big fan, I’m really excited about the new Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping. The book’s ending shows Haymitch hanging out with Katniss and Peeta, and it hints at a really sad backstory involving someone he loved named Lenore Dove. It got me thinking… if the movie stays true to the book, wouldn’t it be amazing to see Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence make a cameo? I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the filmmakers consider it – it would be such a cool nod to the original films!

After a short break, the world of The Hunger Games is back, with Suzanne Collins and Lionsgate clearly interested in telling more stories set in Panem. With the release of Sunrise on the Reaping, fans are eager to see what happens next, and many are hoping for a follow-up to Songbirds and Snakes.

You can stream the original Hunger Games films on HBO Max. Plus, the new movie, Sunrise on the Reaping, is scheduled to hit theaters on November 20th of next year as part of the 2026 film lineup. Hopefully, we’ll even see Hutcherson make a quick appearance!
