The initial trailers for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie revealed which MCU characters would be returning, sparking a lot of funny speculation online about other possible appearances. Now, actor Josh Gad is adding to the fun, jokingly teasing a potential connection through his work on Wonder Man.
In the fourth episode of Wonder Man, titled “Doorman,” Josh Gad appeared as himself. The episode focused on DeMarr Davis, a nightclub bouncer who gained the ability to transform into a human portal. However, his power only worked to things on the other side of whatever solid objects he was touching, essentially making him a living doorway. Despite this limitation, Davis became a hero when he saved people from a fire after the club’s doors jammed shut.
Josh Gad’s character was a frequent visitor to the club and offered Doorman a job as one of his assistants. He later helped Davis start a career in movies, using Davis’s powers as a special effect in a series of heist films. However, this plan went wrong when Gad accidentally got lost while traveling through Davis. As a result, Davis was captured for scientific study, and a rule – called the “Doorman Clause” – was created to prevent people with superpowers from working in Hollywood. At the end of the first season of Wonder Man, it was still unknown what happened to Josh Gad’s character.
Josh Gad hinted at what might happen to his Marvel character with a post on Instagram. The post featured an animated graphic saying “Josh Gad Will Return in Avengers: Doomsday,” mirroring the style of trailers that previously announced the returns of characters like Steve Rogers, Thor, the X-Men, the Wakandans, and the Fantastic Four for the new movie.
How Josh Gad’s Wonder Man role could (but probably won’t) lead into Avengers: Doomsday
Okay, so Josh Gad says he’s going to be in Avengers: Doomsday, but honestly, part of me thinks he’s pulling our leg. I mean, he’s a hilarious guy, known for comedy, and the idea of him showing up in a massive superhero brawl is… unexpected, to say the least. My gut tells me this is a classic case of a fun joke, and he’s just messing with us about a potential MCU variant appearance. It’s a good one, though!
In a previous interview, the showrunner for Wonder Man, Andrew Guest, revealed that the version of Josh Gad in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still alive, but trapped inside the body of Doorman. Guest stated that if Wonder Man gets renewed for another season, they will address what happens to this fictional Josh Gad. He also hinted that this MCU Josh Gad could potentially gain the same abilities as DeMarr Davis’s character. However, it’s unlikely this storyline will play out in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film.
