I was really concerned to read yesterday about the IATSE crew picketing the set of the new Jonathan Majors movie in South Carolina. Now I understand why – apparently, things got dangerous when Jonathan and his co-star, JC Kilcoyne, fell out of a window during a stunt! It sounds like that’s what triggered the strike action. I saw a video of what happened, and it looks pretty scary.
The video shows Majors and Kilcoyne raising their hands when a gunshot is heard. Both actors then fall backward through a glass panel, dropping about six feet to the floor.
Okay, so apparently something really scary happened on set. I read on Deadline that a protective panel they were supposed to replace with something stronger before a later, safe stunt actually wasn’t replaced yet. That’s the one poor Kilcoyne fell through! They said he needed stitches on his hands, but his team is saying he’s okay, got immediate medical attention, and never felt unsafe – which is good to hear, honestly. Majors hasn’t said anything about it publicly, though.
Accident Was the Last Straw for Crew Members
While the recent event caused crew members to quit the film, there had been previous concerns about the movie, which is being made by the conservative media company, The Daily Wire.
Initially, the union, IATSE, tried to negotiate a contract with the production company to ensure contributions to crew members’ health and retirement funds. Shortly after, reports of safety issues began to surface. Workers described dangerous incidents, like props falling and injuring crew members—in one instance, a rigged tree branch struck the set medic. A contractor warned that a planned filming location likely contained asbestos and needed testing. Despite this, producers were still keen to use the building until crew discovered black mold, at which point it was deemed unsafe and abandoned. According to one crew member, the producers didn’t seem to consider the long-term health consequences for the team, suggesting a general lack of competence.
Some crew members expressed safety concerns regarding Chris Bailey, the special effects supervisor responsible for on-set effects like explosions. He was barred from directly handling explosives due to a past criminal conviction, as reported by the Department of Justice in 2021. Bailey stated that no pyrotechnics were handled improperly and characterized the issue as a minor paperwork error. Additionally, crew members worried about a lack of planning meetings before performing complicated stunts and scenes involving prop guns.
Honestly, the story about the window is what really got people talking. One of the crew members who helped clean up afterwards said nobody said a word about anyone falling out – it just felt really off. It seems like that, combined with everything else, was the final straw. By the time the strike started last week, over 60% of us were demanding a union contract with IATSE. We just wanted to be heard and treated fairly.
Daily Wire Movie Is Part of Jonathan Majors’ Planned Comeback

Despite the crew’s requests, it doesn’t appear the producers are willing to compromise. Dallas Sonnier, from Bonfire Legend, explained, “With the industry already suffering from strikes and many people unemployed, this feels like an attempt to stop the few productions still moving forward.” He added, “We are not open to negotiation with those holding these views.”
The new film is being compared to movies like Red Dawn and Toy Soldiers, which both feature teenage boys fighting off an invasion. According to the official description, the movie portrays how American soldiers bravely defend the country and its values when it’s under attack. This is actor Jonathan Majors’ first major role since facing legal issues in 2023 – he was convicted on two misdemeanor counts of assault and harassment related to an incident with his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. He also has roles lined up in the thriller Merciless, directed by Martin Villeneuve (brother of David Villeneuve), and True Threat, where he plays a father seeking revenge for his son’s murder by a Harlem gang called The Apollo Kids.
However, he needs to finish work on The Daily Wire first. Even with the strike ongoing, some filming is still happening, and the production team is attempting to hire replacements for the striking workers. IATSE, the union, is advising people not to accept these positions.
