Jon Snow Was Once Going To Get A Spinoff. Would Kit Harington Return To The Game Of Thrones Universe Now?

Though his character Jon Snow famously knew nothing, Kit Harington definitely has some insights – particularly about returning to the world of Westeros. After spending ten years playing the brooding hero in HBO’s popular series, Game of Thrones, the actor recently discussed his future with the story, and it seems fans might be surprised by what’s next.

Kit Harington, known for his role in Game of Thrones, is now exploring the world of magic. In a recent Variety interview, he discussed his new role voicing Gilderoy Lockhart – the memorable, boastful Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – in Audible’s audiobook adaptation. Naturally, the conversation also touched on a possible return to Winterfell, and Harington gave a pretty clear answer about whether he’d consider revisiting his Game of Thrones character.

No, God no. I don’t wanna go anywhere near it… I spent 10 years doing that. Thanks, I’m alright.

It was a surprisingly straightforward answer, considering how much he usually avoids direct replies. But it makes sense – Jon Snow’s story is really about him gradually taking on more and more burdens and duties.

Jon Snow had a difficult life, growing up believing he was Ned Stark’s illegitimate son. He trained with the Night’s Watch, was betrayed and killed by his fellow brothers, and miraculously brought back to life. He then faced incredibly tough decisions, ultimately having to kill Daenerys after the destruction of King’s Landing. In the end, he rejected the pursuit of power, returning to the Night’s Watch, reuniting with his direwolf Ghost, and venturing north with Tormund and the Free Folk to live beyond the reach of civilization.

Considering a Jon Snow spin-off was reportedly planned with Kit Harington in 2022, and even discussed by George R.R. Martin, the recent dismissal feels particularly harsh. However, given Harington’s expressed exhaustion and the lack of updates, it seems unlikely this project will be revived anytime soon.

This doesn’t mean Kit Harington is leaving fantasy behind. His role as Lockhart proves he still enjoys playing unusual characters in fantastical settings—but now, he’s finding humor in the silliness rather than facing tragic ends.

Harington calls Lockhart a charming, funny, and ultimately sad character, and says it was easy to get into the role. Playing him actually sparked a newfound interest in voice acting and reminded him of a softer side of magic, a welcome change after so many years spent portraying darkness, winter, and war.

Right now, fans will likely only be able to enjoy Kit Harington’s voice work in fantasy projects, rather than seeing him on screen. Given how his character’s story concluded, though, that might actually be a good thing.

Although a Jon Snow spin-off isn’t moving forward, HBO is still building out its Game of Thrones universe. Season 3 of House of the Dragon is coming soon, and a new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will premiere on January 18, 2026. The show will have six episodes, with each one airing on Sundays on HBO and then becoming available to stream on Max.
