DC Comics is introducing a new origin story for the Joker in 2025, and it’s surprisingly complex. The Joker’s past has always been somewhat flexible, but the most well-known version involves him falling into a chemical vat, which disfigures him and drives him to become the infamous Clown Prince of Crime.
DC Comics isn’t afraid to experiment with the Joker’s backstory and how he became Batman’s greatest enemy. We’ve seen this recently in the comics, with some truly terrifying portrayals of the character – like the one in Absolute Batman. But just recently, a more lighthearted version of the Joker emerged, even though his origins remain surprisingly dark and disturbing.
Joker’s New Origin Story Gets Darker The Longer You Think About It
In the ninth episode of Bat-Fam, the Joker appears to gain Damian Wayne as an ally. He does this after connecting with Damian over Batman’s tendency to keep him in the dark about important dangers facing Gotham. To build trust and manipulate Damian, the Joker shares the story of how he became a villain, explaining that it began when he was around the same age as Damian.
A flashback reveals the Joker learning to play pranks from his father, who also enjoyed cruel jokes – and often played them on young Joker himself. The first scene shows the child Joker being injured by mousetraps, making it clear that his difficult childhood is central to understanding his current twisted personality.
The flashback shows the Joker is still deeply affected by a childhood prank his father pulled without him. This experience drives him to create a similar, chaotic relationship with Damian, essentially becoming a father figure as they terrorize Gotham.
While the story uses dark humor, the idea behind the Joker’s upbringing—where abuse was presented as a normal expression of family affection—becomes increasingly disturbing upon reflection. This is particularly impactful because it supports the idea that his claim of being part of the Bat-family is sincere. He simply doesn’t understand healthy relationships and sees this twisted dynamic as the only way to connect with others.
Why Joker’s Bat-Fam Origin Story Makes Him The Perfect Final Villain For Season 1
As someone who’s followed Batman for years, I’ve always appreciated how much the stories emphasize the ‘Bat-Family’ – the way Bruce and the others really care for each other, accept each other’s flaws, and try to understand where everyone’s coming from. So, it didn’t totally shock me when the animated series gave the Joker this really messed-up origin story; it felt like a natural extension of that theme of trying to understand even the most broken people.
Just as Bruce Wayne’s dedication to fatherhood positively impacts Damian and his new adopted sister, Claire, the Joker’s troubled upbringing is revealed. His father undermined him early in life, and the Joker seems to be repeating this harmful pattern in his relationship with Damian.
The dynamic between Batman and the Joker really heightens the suspense at the end of Bat-Fam. The final episode also demonstrates that Damian is more resilient to manipulation than the Joker expects, largely because of how Bruce has raised him.
