Johnny Depp to Produce ‘The Master and Margarita’ Adaptation

Johnny Depp is working on a new film as he continues to rebuild his career. Following his well-known legal issues with Amber Heard, the Pirates of the Caribbean star is taking on several projects to return to Hollywood. His latest venture is producing an English-language adaptation of The Master and Margarita, a celebrated Russian novel by Mikhail Bulgakov considered a masterpiece of 20th-century literature.

Johnny Depp announced a film adaptation of The Master and Margarita at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia last week, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Depp will produce the movie through his production company, IN.2 Film, with several partners. While there have been rumors, Depp is not currently set to star in the adaptation. No actors or director have been confirmed yet.

A new film adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s classic novel, The Master and Margarita, is planned to begin production in late 2026. This will be the first time the story has been adapted into an English-language feature film. Though written in the Soviet Union between 1928 and 1940, the satirical novel wasn’t published until after Bulgakov’s death over twenty years later. The story, which has been adapted for various formats many times, follows the devil’s return to Moscow and the chaos he causes with his mischievous companions, including a talking cat named Behemoth, among the city’s dishonest residents.

Johnny Depp is increasingly returning to prominence in the film industry. After appearing in Jeanne du Barry and directing Modi: Three Days of the Wings of Madness, he’s now poised to take on bigger roles in major Hollywood films. He’s landed a part in the Lionsgate thriller Day Drinker alongside Penélope Cruz, and will star in a potentially controversial biblical comedy, The Carnival at the End of Days, directed by Terry Gilliam, a frequent collaborator. Depp is also preparing to play Ebenezer Scrooge in Ti West’s unique, horror-tinged take on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Johnny Depp’s recent performance as a cynical and unlikeable character is being called his most significant role in a decade, but it might not be his last. There’s growing speculation that he could return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Reports indicate that Depp and Disney are in talks about bringing the hugely successful series back, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed a script for a sixth movie exists. Bruckheimer also hinted that the new film will feature returning characters, leading many to believe Depp is preparing to play Captain Jack Sparrow again.
