The cancellation of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” has reignited a longstanding debate, with media figures and journalists alike discussing the future of late-night television. Veteran host Jay Leno has voiced his opinion on this topic, focusing particularly on the role of political humor in these shows. Although Leno doesn’t support overly political hosting styles, John Oliver has joined the discussion and is vocal about why he disagrees with this viewpoint.
In discussing political satire, Jay Leno expressed that although he appreciates it, he feels hosts can become excessively aligned with one viewpoint. Leno questions why anyone would isolate a specific audience and thinks no one enjoys a sermon-like delivery. During an interview with THR, John Oliver, the host of Last Week Tonight, referenced Leno’s stance as he began his own thoughts on the matter.
I’m going to take a hard pass on taking comedic advice from Jay Leno.
In contrast to Leno who sometimes tackled political issues as a host, John Oliver and others delve much deeper. Notably, “Last Week Tonight” is a satirical news program, while “The Tonight Show” serves more as a traditional variety talk show. However, hosts such as Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers also offer political commentary, mainly during their opening monologues. When discussing Leno’s thoughts on alienation, Oliver responded:
Is there a specific group of people who find that approach amusing? Well, humor can’t please everyone as it’s quite subjective. Some comedians aim to entertain a wider audience, which is perfectly fine. On the other hand, others choose not to, and that’s also acceptable. I don’t believe there are strict rules about how comedy should be done because it’s all about what appeals to people. It’s essentially what people find funny.
As a dedicated fan, I’d say that on “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver doesn’t shy away from tackling politics, but he also isn’t afraid to take jabs at corporate giants, even those who are his employers. He’s known for publicly reprimanding his “corporate dad,” Warner Bros. Discovery, over their content cancellations and other controversial business moves. He’s even been outspoken against industry heavyweights like Disney and Hotstar due to a censorship issue in 2020. Oliver employs sharp wit and satire when discussing political and societal issues, but his intent isn’t to attack a specific political party; rather, it’s about shedding light on important matters and fostering informed conversations.
Our series seems to stem from a particular perspective, yet it steers clear of being overtly political. Instead, we delve into systemic problems. Recent episodes have explored topics such as gang databases, AI misuse, juvenile justice, medical spas, and air traffic control. While each episode undeniably carries a viewpoint, the aim is for these issues to resonate beyond political beliefs. Ideally, people can find common ground in acknowledging the problems, even if they disagree on potential solutions.
In the wake of CBS announcing the cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s show following their merger with Skydance, owned by parent company Paramount, the late-night host is still addressing political topics. Despite CBS stating the decision was purely financial, some people suspect there may be other motives at play. Specifically, it’s been rumored that the cancellation could be linked to Paramount’s $16 million settlement with U.S. President Donald Trump, a situation that Colbert had been openly critical of.
A lot of people are still grieving over the upcoming finale of “The Late Show,” scheduled for May 2026. John Oliver, along with Jimmy Kimmel and Bowen Yang, have voiced their opinions against its cancellation. As the late-night television scene continues to change, it remains to be seen if hosts will keep incorporating politics in their content or follow Jay Leno’s advice and move away from it over time.
