John Carpenter, the celebrated director behind films like Halloween and The Thing, is an avid gamer – a surprisingly uncommon trait in Hollywood. Despite the growing popularity of gaming and fantastic adaptations like The Last of Us, some people still dismiss it and don’t recognize it as a legitimate art form.
It’s great to hear John Carpenter talking about the video games he enjoys. He clearly loves gaming, but he admits he doesn’t finish every game he starts. He found at least one game so difficult that he had to stop playing and try something different.
John Carpenter Couldn’t Get Through Red Dead Redemption
John Carpenter began gaming in the 1990s after his son showed him Sonic the Hedgehog. He’s been a regular player ever since, using games to unwind. Now a seasoned gamer, there are still a few titles on his list he hasn’t finished, like Red Dead Redemption.
The director of Escape from New York attempted to play the classic Rockstar game, but he found it too difficult and eventually stopped. Carpenter explained that the controls were confusing and he couldn’t even figure out how to ride the horse.
It’s funny to me, because the complaints people have actually remind me more of Red Dead Redemption 2 than the first game. The controls in the original RDR felt a lot like GTA, which was easy to get used to. But RDR2 really went all-in on realism with much more complicated controls – it almost felt like you were actually a cowboy! Even though the reviewer, Carpenter, understood that, he just didn’t enjoy that level of complexity, and that’s totally fair.
It’s wonderful to see someone like John Carpenter openly talk about enjoying games, and even more so that he’s comfortable admitting when a game isn’t for him. Many gamers feel obligated to finish games they dislike, hoping their opinion will change. Carpenter seems to recognize there are simply too many games and not enough time, so he focuses on the ones he truly enjoys.
John Carpenter’s Favorite Games Are Surprisingly Varied
John Carpenter didn’t enjoy Red Dead Redemption, but he does have many favorite games. In a recent interview, he surprisingly shared his love for Fallout 76, admitting he “really like[s] it” despite acknowledging it “had a rough launch, with problems and bugs.”
Carpenter also really enjoys playing Horizon Forbidden West, calling it “astonishing,” and many others agree. He’s a big fan of the Assassin’s Creed series too, and particularly loved Black Flag, which he described as a “fabulous game.”
While John Carpenter enjoys popular franchises, he’s also highlighted lesser-known games like the French action-adventure title, Remember Me. He specifically praised the game’s strong female protagonist and its imaginative futuristic setting.
John Carpenter is currently working on two video games, John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando and Halloween: The Game, both expected to be released next year. Known for his iconic films, it will be fascinating to see the celebrated horror director apply his skills and imagination to game development, a long-held passion of his.
