John Boyega Confirms He’s Spoken to Dave Filoni About a Return to ‘Star Wars’

John Boyega, known for his role in Star Wars, has said he discussed the possibility of returning to the franchise with Lucasfilm’s Dave Filoni. He didn’t share any specifics, but the news has gotten fans talking.

People are wondering if John Boyega’s character, Finn, will appear in future Star Wars stories. However, some believe audiences may not be interested in seeing more adventures with the character, who went from being a stormtrooper to a hero for the Resistance.

Boyega Confirms Conversation with Filoni

The discussion happened during a panel at MEGACON Orlando. A reporter from ScreenRant led the conversation and asked John Boyega if he’d consider playing Finn again. Before Boyega could respond, someone in the audience yelled, “Call Dave!”

Boyega replied, “I actually have, actually.”

Dave Filoni took on the roles of President and Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm in January. We don’t know if John Boyega spoke with Filoni before or after he became a leader at the studio. However, their discussion about Finn potentially returning indicates that Boyega or Lucasfilm has been considering what’s next for the character.

John Boyega’s connection with Disney and Star Wars fans has been complex over time. He’s sometimes voiced his frustrations, but at other times, he’s suggested he’d be willing to reprise his role.

A Complicated History with Disney and Fans

In a 2020 interview with GQ, John Boyega publicly criticized Disney, stating that they initially presented his character, Finn, as significant but then reduced his role in the films. He pointed out that while Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver’s characters were well-developed, the studio didn’t seem to know what to do with Kelly Marie Tran or his own character. Many fans agreed, believing Finn’s importance was unfairly lessened throughout the sequel trilogy.

By 2023, John Boyega had become more flexible in his views. After a new Star Wars movie focusing on Rey was announced, he stated he’d be willing to consider any project that was fun, had a strong cast, and was directed by a talented director.

After that project stalled, Boyega directed his criticisms at the fanbase.

In a 2025 documentary, he explained that Star Wars traditionally felt like a universe populated by mostly white, privileged characters. He believes audiences are okay with Black actors playing secondary roles, like Lando Calrissian, but become resistant when Black actors are cast as the main heroes. He said that when Black actors take leading roles, some fans accuse the creators of ‘pandering’ and feel it goes too far.

Boyega’s remarks come as the Star Wars franchise has been facing challenges due to some recent films and shows that fans haven’t agreed on – and his own movies were often part of those discussions. With new leadership at Lucasfilm, it seems Boyega is now starting to talk with Dave Filoni again.

Finn’s Future

It’s still unclear if Dave Filoni will continue the stories of characters from the sequel trilogy. However, John Boyega and the studio are currently talking, which suggests Finn might return at some point – though the details of that return, including when or how it might happen, are still a mystery. For now, fans are left to guess what’s next for the former stormtrooper.
