Following his hit role in A Complete Unknown, Jeremy Allen White is now preparing to play a famous rock star in a new movie, and people are eager to see how he does. The The Bear actor will be playing Bruce Springsteen in a musical biopic called Deliver Me From Nowhere, which is scheduled to hit theaters on October 24, 2025. Interestingly, White decided not to ask other actors who have played musicians, such as Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler, for advice. It will be interesting to see if his reasoning behind that choice proves successful.
The Shameless actor recently explained why he didn’t ask his colleagues for guidance on how to make his performance unique, especially with so many musical biopics being released. Although it would seem logical to consult with the acclaimed Chalamet, White shared with Variety the single reason he decided against it:
I didn’t speak with Austin [Butler], Rami [Malek], or Timothée [Chalamet]. I sometimes wonder if I should have, but my approach was unique because I had Bruce. A part of me considered isolating myself completely, and if I needed external input, I’d go directly to him. I felt incredibly fortunate to have him so readily available.
As a huge movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by how actors dive into biopic roles – it’s seriously intense, especially when they’re playing someone as iconic as a musical legend. There’s a lot of pressure, right? You’ve got to satisfy the existing fans, but more importantly, you’re trying to do justice to a real person’s life. I mean, actors really go all out! Take Austin Butler, for example. His method acting for Elvis was so committed, he ended up speaking with an Elvis accent for years after filming wrapped! And then there’s Timothée Chalamet, who learned to sing and play guitar *exactly* like Bob Dylan – his co-stars apparently couldn’t even tell the difference!
Actors Butler, Chalamet, and Malek (known for his role as Queen’s Freddie Mercury) have all experienced significant success after undergoing similar transformations, and they likely could have offered valuable advice. After speaking with Butler while filming their new A24 movie Enemies, White now wishes he had asked for their input.
However, this isn’t After Everything actor Jeremy Allen White’s first time playing a real person; he previously portrayed one of the Von Erich brothers in The Iron Claw. Also, I believe his approach of getting input only from himself and the “Thunder Road” singer is logical, considering the kind of story director Scott Cooper is aiming to tell.
Much like A Complete Unknown, Deliver Me From Nowhere focuses on a particular period in Bruce Springsteen’s life rather than attempting to cover his entire biography in a single film. The new biopic tells the story of how Nebraska was created – an album “The Boss” famously recorded entirely on his own at home in New Jersey. Nebraska stands out as a more stripped-down, acoustic album with somber subject matter, a departure from much of Springsteen’s other work, and it was clearly a very personal project for him.
Similar to how Bruce Springsteen created Nebraska, Jeremy Allen White really focused on his work and kept to himself while filming, only seeking advice from the one person who truly understood the character. However, the Born In The USA artist shared that he preferred to stay home during scenes that were emotionally difficult.
This biopic about Bruce Springsteen takes a surprisingly fresh approach, and like A Complete Unknown, it promises to be a truly compelling film. Daniel White appears to have meticulously prepared for his role as Springsteen, and he’s received praise not only from Springsteen himself – affectionately known as “The Boss” – but also from Austin Butler, who’s no stranger to musical biopics. Early glimpses of Deliver Me From Nowhere are already generating excitement, and I’m eager to see if White’s dedication will establish him as a standout performer in the genre.
