Jennifer Lawrence And Tessa Thompson Discussed Peeing In A Funnel While Playing Mystique And Valkyrie, And It’s Both Funny And Horrifying

Superhero movies remain incredibly popular, especially with the rise of connected cinematic universes. Disney+ subscribers can enjoy the Marvel films in order, along with the X-Men series. Starring in these franchises are Tessa Thompson and Jennifer Lawrence, and the two talented actresses recently shared a funny story about having to use a funnel as part of their costumes.

Jennifer Lawrence famously played Mystique in four X-Men movies, starting with First Class and ending with her surprise death in Dark Phoenix. Thompson is still playing Valkyrie in the MCU, most recently popping up for a cameo in The Marvels. The pair of actresses recently appeared together on The Graham Norton Show, where they traded stories about not being able to use the bathroom in their superhero suits. Lawrence started, saying:

They didn’t provide any facilities for me to use the restroom while with Mystique. I really needed to go, but they insisted it wasn’t necessary.

It’s a surprisingly common problem for actors playing superheroes – it’s been happening for years. Christian Bale actually advised Ben Affleck to test if he could use the bathroom while wearing the Batman suit when he took the role. It’s definitely not something that only affects female actors in these types of films.

Disney+ offers streaming access to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and X-Men films. You can start watching with ads for as little as $11.99 per month. For an ad-free experience, it’s $18.99 a month, or you can save 16% by paying $189.99 for a full year. See the deal here.

Tessa Thompson found she had a lot in common with the actress from Silver Linings Playbook, explaining she experienced a similar problem when getting into costume as Valkyrie. She also shared that she initially had trouble using the restroom while filming the Thor movies, saying:

I experienced the same problem, and it made me realize we needed a fix. They added a zipper, but the costume itself remains unchanged.

It seems obvious that actors in costumes – especially those filming long superhero movies – should have easy access to the restroom. However, costume designers often prioritize appearance over practicality. Instead of zippers, two actresses were given a funnel as a solution, as Jennifer Lawrence explained:

They gave me a funnel to stand and pee.

That’s an unusual solution, to say the least. While men commonly stand to urinate, this suggestion was quite surprising for Lawrence and Thompson. Thompson confirmed she was also offered this option, but ultimately couldn’t go through with it. Here’s how she described the experience:

They gave me that too! But I was like ‘I don’t- I can’t. I can’t do it.’

It’s understandable why she’d be hesitant. Trying to use the bathroom while wearing a Valkyrie costume is awkward and messy, and the thought of being covered in urine sounds awful. It makes you wonder what stopped Thompson from using the provided funnel.

Now that Jennifer Lawrence has finished playing Mystique, many fans are hoping to see Tessa Thompson in future Marvel films. She wasn’t listed among the cast for the upcoming Doomsday movie, so it’s currently unknown when she’ll return to the screen.

You can now watch Jennifer Lawrence and Tessa Thompson in their superhero roles on Disney+. However, it’s hard to forget the recent stories about their difficult experiences with the portable restrooms on set.
