Jenna Dewan’s status in The Rookie gets a clarifying update.
Despite being a procedural drama that’s been on the air for a while – something that’s rare these days – The Rookie is actually growing in popularity. The latest season, season 8, had the show’s biggest-ever start on streaming, placing it among ABC’s top 5 streaming premieres. However, even with this success, the show is preparing for potential budget reductions.
In his Matt’s Inside Line newsletter, reporter Matt Webb Mitovich addressed a question about Jenna Dewan’s role on The Rookie. While her character, Bailey Nune, has relocated to Washington D.C., Dewan remains a regular cast member and will continue to appear in future episodes.
It’s understandable to wonder about Dewan’s future on the show, and I initially questioned it too. However, I’m now hearing that his role isn’t changing. We saw this week that they’re planning to keep him involved through things like video calls with John. Similar to what they did with Grey after he finished as Watch Commander, the show is good at finding creative ways to include characters even when they’re not actively part of the main team.
Recent episodes of The Rookie, specifically season 8, episode 6, “Burn 4 Love,” show a big shift for the characters, particularly Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Bailey. Nolan finally agrees to let Bailey pursue a job opportunity in Washington D.C., though it wasn’t an easy decision for the popular couple. They ultimately believe this move is the best path forward for both of them.
The change in Bailey’s filming location was noticeable because The Rookie has a big ensemble cast. Besides Nathan Fillion and Alyssa Dewan, the show also features Eric Winter, Melissa O’Neil, Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Shawn Ashmore, Lisseth Chavez, and newcomer Deric Augustine as Miles Penn.
As a big fan of The Rookie, I’m a little worried about the recent news about budget cuts at ABC. It sounds like they might have to make some changes to keep costs down. I’ve heard they could reduce the number of main actors we see each week, or even just make fewer episodes per season. Hopefully, they’ll focus on strong stories instead of big, expensive action sequences and exotic locations. I’d rather see a well-written, character-driven show than one that relies too much on flashy effects!
The future of “The Rookie” is uncertain, and the show could take various paths. We’ll likely have a clearer picture if it’s renewed for a ninth season. It’s not the only show facing this; “Grey’s Anatomy” and “9-1-1” on ABC are also dealing with budget cuts. This is a common challenge for network TV right now, due to falling advertising income and changes in the entertainment industry. However, a new role for Bailey doesn’t necessarily mean Dewan will be leaving the show.
The Rookie season 8 airs Mondays at 10 PM ET on ABC and streams on Hulu.
