The idea of revisiting the story with Starman’s child is appealing, and the possibility of a follow-up has been tried before, though without much success. In 1986, just two years after the original film, ABC aired a brief television series called Starman. It centered on Scott Hayden Jr., now a teenager, and his father, who was living as a photojournalist named Paul Forrester, played by Robert Hays. Unfortunately, the series received only average reviews and was cancelled in May 1987 after a short run.
I’ve been thinking about a potential return to the world of Starman, and it’s exciting to consider, even after all these years since the original came out in ’84. Jeff Bridges seems open to it too, and honestly, seeing how well TRON: Legacy and the upcoming TRON: Ares did, it makes me hopeful we might see him revisit that character again. It would be amazing!

Look, I love John Carpenter, but let’s be real – it’s probably not going to happen that he directs a Starman sequel. He’s been happily retired for a while now, and it would take something truly special to get him back behind the camera. Still, I’m hopeful! If we get a director who really gets the original, someone like Joseph Kosinski who clearly loves that nostalgic feel – like he did with TRON: Legacy and Top Gun: Maverick – I think they could absolutely pull it off and make a fantastic movie.
Finding the right actor to play Scott Heyman Jr. is crucial, but there are many talented young actors who could create great chemistry with Jeff Bridges or Karen Allen. The original film’s heartfelt emotion would make it easy to tap into the same warm, nostalgic feeling. However, the world feels less optimistic now than Starman might have hoped. This raises interesting questions: would that lead him to reconnect with Jenny and meet their son? There’s definitely potential for that storyline, and if Jeff Bridges is interested, it would open up a lot of exciting possibilities.
Starman Is Human-First (and Alien-First) Sci-Fi
You know, revisiting Starman really solidifies its place as a classic.
