This filmmaker has directed many classic, award-winning movies throughout his long career, including *E.T.*, *Schindler’s List*, and *Saving Private Ryan*. However, director Quentin Tarantino considers his 1975 thriller to be “the greatest movie ever made.”
The classic movie *Jaws* is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025 with a new documentary, but fans will soon have to find a new way to watch it and its sequels. *Jaws*, *Jaws 2*, *Jaws 3*, and *Jaws: The Revenge* are all leaving Netflix on November 15th, according to What’s on Netflix.
Starring Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw, this movie is widely considered a classic and one of the best films ever made. It has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with a 97% score from critics and a 91% rating from over 250,000 viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
For me, *Jaws* is the ultimate movie experience – not necessarily the greatest *film* ever, but the most purely enjoyable and effective movie. Few films even come close to reaching that level. Honestly, you can’t improve on *Jaws*; it’s perfect as it is. And it really highlights how dated so many preJaws* movies feel now – it completely changed the game.
The movie is adapted from Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel and begins with the town of Amity eagerly anticipating the Fourth of July celebrations and the boost in tourism. The mood quickly shifts when a woman is fatally attacked by a shark during a nighttime swim, setting a terrifying tone. Roy Scheider plays Chief Martin Brody, who teams up with marine biologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and the gruff Quint (Robert Shaw) to hunt down and destroy the dangerous great white shark.
Spielberg Thought Jaws Would End His Career
While at the opening of a new, large-scale *Jaws* exhibit at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, Steven Spielberg admitted he wasn’t fully prepared to make the original *Jaws* film back in 1974. He continued this tradition at the event, explaining he hadn’t prepared any remarks for the audience, instead relying on memories sparked by the cleverly designed exhibition he’d just experienced.
I remember the director telling me he honestly thought his career was finished about halfway through filming *Jaws*. People were telling him straight to his face that no one would ever hire him again, and he really believed it!
The movie *Jaws* was a huge hit, making $476.5 million around the world on a budget of only $9 million. It also won three Academy Awards: for Best Sound, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Dramatic Score, thanks to John Williams’ famous soundtrack. While *Jaws* led to three sequels, none of them were as financially successful, and most received negative reviews.
Released in 1987, *Jaws: The Revenge* brought back Lorraine Gary from the original *Jaws* film, where she played Ellen Brody. Michael Caine also starred in the movie. However, it’s known for being the worst-reviewed film in the *Jaws* series, earning only a 2% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience scores are also low, at 15%.
The Jaws franchise is streaming on Netflix until Nov. 15.
