Get ready for more scares! Jason Voorhees is returning in a new Friday the 13th movie, and it promises to be terrifying.
Producer Robert Barsamian recently revealed to SFX Magazine that a new installment – the 13th – in the popular horror franchise is in development, along with a new video game. He also hinted that Jason Voorhees will reappear in surprising ways, potentially through brief appearances or even a shocking return from the dead. Horror fans are now eagerly awaiting what’s next.
Horror, Inc.’s CMO, Sheri Conn, announced that Jason Voorhees is getting a new look. She explained that Jason’s appearance has changed throughout the 12 films, so they drew inspiration from his most memorable designs. The team redesigned his mask, making his eyes more intimidating and including the classic 13 holes as a nod to the franchise’s history.
Conn explained that the new design will be implemented consistently, though with minor adjustments to suit each project’s unique needs. When questioned about where this fits within the *Friday the 13th* storyline, Barsamian remained intentionally unclear. He stated they are considering various possibilities while prioritizing staying true to the original spirit of the franchise.
Jason recently starred in a short film directed by Mike Nelson. The director shared his excitement, saying, “I’m so thankful Horror, Inc. liked ‘Sweet Revenge’ and included it in the Jason Voorhees saga! It’s amazing to think I used to sneak and watch these movies on VHS as a kid.”
I’m so excited for the new *Crystal Lake* series coming to Peacock! This short film really feels like a perfect introduction to the reboot and prequel. While they’re keeping most of the story under wraps, I did learn that it will explore the backstory of Jason’s mother, Pamela Voorhees, and her role as the original killer. It’s going to be fascinating to see how they build on that!
Crystal Lake Will Likely Serve as A Pamela Voorhees Origin Story
The writing for the series was initially scheduled to begin in late January 2023, with Kevin Williamson writing an episode. However, the Writers Guild of America strike in May 2023 stopped production. Then, in May 2024, A24 decided to change the creative direction of the series, leading to Kevin Williamson leaving the project.
Production was scheduled to begin in August 2024, with each of the eight episodes costing around $10 million to make. Vincenzo Natali and Kimberly Peirce were set to direct, suggesting a visually impressive new direction for the series. The cast includes Linda Cardellini, along with Callum Vinson playing a young Jason Voorhees, and supporting actors William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom.
The Friday the 13th reboot and Crystal Lake do not have release dates at this time.
