While critics weren’t impressed with the 2023 sci-fi monster movie ‘Meg 2: The Trench,’ viewers generally enjoyed it. Now, three years after its release, the film is becoming available on a new streaming service.
Amazon announced that Meg 2 will be available to stream on Prime Video starting January 1, 2026. The movie continues the story of the 2018 film The Meg, with Jason Statham returning as the lead. The plot follows a dangerous deep-sea exploration that goes wrong. Along with Statham, Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, and Cliff Curtis are back, and they’re joined by new cast members Wu Jing, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, and Skyler Samuels.

The first Meg movie received mixed reviews, earning a 47% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers generally enjoyed Meg 2, with 72% of over 1,000 Rotten Tomatoes users giving it a positive rating. According to audience feedback, the movie delivers what people want from a monster movie once the action starts.
Mark Keizer, writing for AV Club, offered even stronger positive feedback. He noted that while Meg 2: The Trench makes similar mistakes as the original, it also builds upon what the first film did well, making it a slight improvement overall.
Just like the first movie, Meg 2 did well in theaters despite receiving mostly negative reviews. While it didn’t reach the $500 million mark like the original, it still earned a solid $398.5 million worldwide in 2023, considering it cost over $129 million to make.
The Future of Statham’s Meg Franchise Is Currently Up in the Air
As of today, a third Meg movie hasn’t been officially confirmed. While the first film received mixed reviews, its strong box office performance could lead to a sequel. Director Ben Wheatley has also indicated he’d be interested in continuing the series, which is based on
In a 2023 interview with Total Film, director Edgar Wright explained that the world of the films is incredibly detailed and interesting, especially due to its international scope.
