Jason Momoa’s ‘The Last Manhunt’ Now Streaming on Tubi

Jason Momoa is famous for his roles in blockbuster franchises like Dune, Aquaman, and A Minecraft Movie. He’s also well-known from TV shows such as the action series See on Apple TV and the popular Stargate Atlantis. While he often appears in large-scale productions, Momoa also enjoys working on smaller, independent films. He even directed his own movie, the 2014 action film Road to Paloma. However, one of his more recent projects hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves and could become a hit on streaming services.

In 2022, Jason Momoa tried his hand at westerns with the action drama, The Last Manhunt. While smaller in scale than many of his popular films, and co-created by Momoa himself, the movie features a strong cast and good acting, making it a potentially overlooked gem in his growing body of work.

You can now watch The Last Manhunt on Tubi for free, starting March 18th. The action-packed western, which had a brief run in theaters late last year, is set in the early 1900s Wild West and tells the story of a young man’s forbidden romance with a woman from the Chemehuevi tribe. The film is based on the real-life story of Willie Boy, who was the subject of what was known as the “last manhunt” in the final years of the Wild West. This story was previously told in the 1969 film Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here, starring Robert Redford.

While Jason Momoa is not Willie Boy himself, he finds himself in a smaller role behind an impressive ensemble cast. The Last Manhunt stars Martin Sensmeier (Westworld), Mainei Kinimaka (Chief of War), Zahn McClarnon (Reservation Dogs), Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), and Raoul Max Trujillo (Blue Beetle), among many others. The film was directed by Christian Camargo (Days and Nights) based on a script from Thomas Pa’a Sibbett (Braven), who co-created the story alongside Momoa. Read the official synopsis:

As a real Western enthusiast, I was immediately drawn to the story of Willie Boy. It’s based on what actually happened back in the early 1900s, and it’s a heartbreaking tale. Willie Boy and Carlota, a young woman from the Chemehuevi tribe, fell in love, but their families didn’t approve. Sadly, a tragic event happened, and they were forced to run away from everything they knew.

What Did Critics Say About the Film?

Saban Films

I have to admit, The Last Manhunt didn’t really land with critics when it came out in 2022. It’s currently sitting at a 20% on Rotten Tomatoes, though that’s based on just 10 reviews so far. A lot of the negative feedback, like Todd Jorgenson at Cinemalogue pointed out, felt like the film was beautiful to look at, but didn’t really dig deep enough into the indigenous culture it was portraying. They also said it felt a bit slow and that Jason Momoa wasn’t on screen enough! But it wasn’t a total wash – Common Sense Media actually thought it worked as a small, well-acted Western, praising its stunning visuals and how effectively it used its beautiful scenery.

While critics’ opinions matter, audiences shouldn’t base their decision solely on them. In this instance, The Last Manhunt was much better received by regular users. With over 100 ratings, it scored an impressive 84% on Popcornmeter. Although it’s too soon to know if the film will be a hit on streaming platforms, it’s a great choice for anyone looking for a fun, low-budget Western to watch at home.
